About the competition

The Moot Court Society, Department of Law, Assam University (A Central University), Silchar, is organising its maiden national-level moot court competition, the 1st Assam University National Moot Court Competition, 2026. The oral rounds will be held physically at the Assam University campus at Dargakona, Silchar, on 27 and 28 November 2026.

The competition theme is Constitutional Law / Criminal Law / Environmental Law. The moot proposition, released on 7 October 2026, concerns the protection of the critically endangered pygmy hog in the fictional State of Avalom and the proceedings before the High Court of Avalom.

Eligibility and team composition

  • Open to students pursuing a three-year LL.B. or five-year integrated LL.B. programme at a recognised institution in India (a university, college, law school or department of law recognised by the Bar Council of India / UGC).
  • Each team has not more than three members: two Speakers and one Researcher.
  • Only one team per institution; no participant may be a member of more than one team.
  • Teams need an institutional nomination / endorsement letter signed by the Head of the Institution, Dean or Principal.
  • Final-year students awaiting results are eligible only if the institution certifies their student status as on 27 November 2026.
  • Practising advocates and enrolled members of any State Bar Council are ineligible.

Format and rounds

  • Memorial Round: teams submit memorials for both Petitioner and Respondent. The Memorial Round is capped at 32 teams, registered on a first-come, first-served basis (the Organising Committee may keep a waiting list).
  • The top 16 teams on memorial scores advance to the offline oral rounds at Silchar.
  • Octa-finals and Quarter-finals on 27 November 2026; Semi-finals and the Final on 28 November 2026, followed by the valedictory and prize distribution.
  • Time per round: 20 minutes per team till the Quarter-finals; speaker time 10 + 10 minutes, including rebuttal / sur-rebuttal.

Memorial guidelines

  • Memorials are submitted as PDFs on the participant portal (aunmcc2026.ai.studio), named [TeamCode]_Petitioner.pdf and [TeamCode]_Respondent.pdf, by 31 October 2026, 11:59 PM IST.
  • A4, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman 12 pt with 1.5 line spacing, justified; footnotes 10 pt, single spaced.
  • The body of the memorial (Statement of Jurisdiction to Prayer, inclusive of footnotes) must not exceed 30 pages.
  • Citation: Bluebook (21st ed.).
  • No institution name, identifying mark or metadata in the memorial; a Team Code is allotted.
  • A similarity index above 15% may lead to penalty or disqualification. Generative AI may be used only for language correction and must be disclosed in a declaration.
  • The 16 qualifying teams bring five hard copies of each memorial to the venue.

Fee

  • There is no fee for registration and memorial submission in the Memorial Qualification Round.
  • Only the 16 teams advancing to the oral rounds pay a final registration fee of Rs 3,000 per team, during final registration (3 to 8 November 2026). The brochure states that food and accommodation are included.
  • The fee is payable by UPI / NEFT in favour of Assam University Project Account II; the brochure says payment details are on the official website.
  • Registration fee once remitted is non-refundable, except if the competition is cancelled or postponed.

How to apply

  • Download the moot proposition and rules from the official website.
  • Complete the online provisional registration form on the official portal by 22 October 2026, with the institution nomination letter and identity cards of every participant.
  • Clarification queries (not more than three per team) are submitted only through the participant portal by 15 October 2026.
  • Submit both memorials on the portal by 31 October 2026, 11:59 PM IST.
  • Qualified teams receive the final registration link on their registered e-mail and complete final registration with fee payment between 3 and 8 November 2026.

Participant benefits and hospitality

  • Every participant receives a certificate and a traditional Assamese Gamosa; certificates of participation are given for both the Memorial Round and the oral rounds, and semi-finalists receive certificates of merit.
  • One month of access to the SCC Online Web Edition for all participants (valued at Rs 3,100 each), as stated in the brochure.
  • Stay at university guest houses, including the International Guest House (details shared upon confirmation), with welcome kit, meals, local transport and a medical help desk.
  • Silchar is reachable via Silchar Airport (Kumbhirgram) and Silchar Railway Station.
