About the Competition and the Organiser

The Chair on Consumer Law and Practice (CLAP) at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, is holding its 1st Online Consumer Law Moot Court Competition 2026, run in commemoration of National Consumer Rights Day (24 December 2026). The competition invites law students from across the country to engage with contemporary issues in consumer protection law through written and oral advocacy. It is conducted entirely online.

Moot Proposition

The proposition, released on 28 September 2026, is set in the fictional Republic of Indica, whose laws mirror Indian law. It concerns KwikBazaar, a multi-category e-commerce app with a buy-now-pay-later product, and draws on the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the CCPA Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023, the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, with Articles 136 and 226 of the Constitution in play. Clarifications may be sought in writing at consumerlaw@nls.ac.in.

Eligibility and Team Composition

  • Open to students currently enrolled in a B.A. LL.B. or LL.B. programme.
  • Each team has 2 members, and both must belong to the same college or university.
  • Only one team per college or university is permitted.

Registration Fee and How to Register

  • Registration fee: Rs 2,000 per team, payable by 15 October 2026 through the official Razorpay payment link.
  • Fill in the official Google Form with the details of both team members.
  • Upload the payment receipt and an authorisation letter issued by your college or university in the Google Form.
  • Registration is complete only when the form, payment receipt and authorisation letter are all submitted by the deadline. Keep the receipt and registration confirmation safe.

Memorial Rules

  • Each team submits two memorials, for the Petitioner/Complainant and the Respondent/Opposite Party, in PDF only (TeamCode_Petitioner.pdf / TeamCode_Respondent.pdf). No hard copies are required.
  • A4, Times New Roman 12 pt (footnotes 10 pt), 1.5-line spacing, 1-inch margins; uniform citation style such as the latest Bluebook or OSCOLA.
  • The Arguments Advanced section must not exceed 3,000 words, with a 10% tolerance.
  • Only the allotted team code may appear; any disclosure of identity leads to disqualification.
  • Plagiarism and AI-content scores above 10% attract deductions, and above 15% make the memorial liable for disqualification.
  • Late submissions (1 to 3 November 2026) lose 1.5 marks per team, per side, for each day of delay.

Competition Format

The competition is a knock-out across four stages. All registered teams are scored on combined memorial marks for both sides, and the top 8 advance to the online Octa-Finals. From there, advancement rests only on oral round marks: the top 4 reach the Semi-Finals and the top 2 reach the Final, which decides the Winner and the Runner-Up.

Prize Distribution

Results will be declared and prizes distributed on 24 December 2026 in New Delhi, at the National Consumer Rights Day event organised by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India. The exact venue will be announced later, and the Winning and Runner-Up teams must make their own travel arrangements to receive the awards in person. All participating teams and speakers are eligible for certificates of participation or achievement as applicable.
