3rd National Moot Court Competition on Consumer Protection Laws, 2026, NUSRL Ranchi [Offline; Cash Prizes Rs 1,00,000]

The Chair on Consumer Research and Policy (CCRP), National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, is organising the 3rd National Moot Court Competition on Consumer Protection Laws, 2026, under the aegis of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. The oral rounds are held offline at NUSRL, Ranchi from 27 to 29 November 2026.

The competition takes up contemporary questions of consumer protection, including e-commerce, misleading advertisements, product defects and the balance between consumer rights and corporate interests, and tests participants through written memorials, a Researcher's Test and oral advocacy.

NUSRL, Ranchi was established by the Jharkhand Government under the National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi Act, 2010, and offers B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M., Ph.D. and postgraduate diploma programmes. The Chair on Consumer Research and Policy was established at NUSRL in October 2024 by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, to promote research, teaching and training in consumer law and to act as a think tank on consumer affairs.

• Open to students enrolled in a full-time three-year or five-year bachelor's law programme at a recognised Indian college, university or institution at the time of the competition.
• Each institution may send a maximum of 3 teams.
• A team has either 2 members (both Speakers) or 3 members (2 Speakers and 1 Researcher). The team composition must be identified at the time of registration.
• Changes in team composition need the Organising Committee's approval, a registration form and an authority letter signed by the head of the institution, and are not allowed after memorials are submitted.
• No additional member or team coach may accompany the team.
• Each team must submit an authorisation letter from its university, proof of payment of the registration fee, and the official identity cards of all participants.

Registration is through the official Google Form and must be made through the designated moot court society of the college or university. The deadline is 11:59 PM IST on 25 October 2026.

• Memorial Qualifier Round fee: INR 1,500 per team. Teams must pay first and upload the proof of payment (JPEG/JPG screenshot or PDF) in the registration form by 11:59 PM IST on 25 October 2026.
• Oral Rounds with accommodation (qualifying teams only): INR 7,000.
• Oral Rounds without accommodation: INR 5,500.

The oral rounds fee and the confirmation of travel itinerary are due from qualifying teams by 11:59 PM IST on 18 November 2026; the form for this is released after the memorial round results. All fees are non-refundable, and gateway or platform charges are borne by the teams. Each validated team receives a Team Code to be used in all correspondence, on memorials and in the oral rounds.

Accommodation covered by the INR 7,000 fee is for the days of the competition only, 27 to 29 November 2026 (2 nights and 3 days). Teams arriving on 26 November or staying the night of 29 November must arrange their own accommodation. An additional night on campus, where rooms are available, is charged at Rs 1,500 per person per night on a first-come, first-served basis and does not include food.

• Each team prepares one memorial for each side: Complainant and Opposite Party. The soft copy is submitted through the official memorial submission form in both MS Word (.doc/.docx) and PDF format by 11:59 PM IST on 31 October 2026, with files named [TEAM CODE]_C and [TEAM CODE]_R.
• Late submission costs one mark per hour until 2:59 AM IST on 1 November 2026; memorials received after that are not accepted and the team is disqualified.
• Maximum 40 pages per memorial, with the Arguments Advanced capped at 25 pages and the Statement of Facts at 2 pages.
• Times New Roman 12 (1.5 spacing, justified), footnotes Times New Roman 10 (single spacing), 1-inch margins; Bluebook 21st edition citation. Blue cover for the Complainant, red for the Opposite Party.
• Plagiarism above 10% and AI-generated content above 10% attract penalties, and non-existent cases or authorities may lead to disqualification.
• Qualifying teams must bring 10 printed copies (5 per side) on arrival on 27 November 2026.

• Memorial Round: up to 16 teams with the highest memorial scores (out of 50) qualify for the oral rounds at NUSRL, Ranchi.
• Researcher's Test: held on 27 November 2026 with objective and subjective questions, taken by the designated Researcher (in a two-member team, one member is designated Researcher).
• Preliminary Rounds: two rounds, each team arguing once for each side; 20 minutes per team including rebuttal. The top 8 teams on aggregate advance.
• Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals: knock-out with power fixtures; 30 minutes per team, each speaker arguing for at least 12 minutes.
• Final: 45 minutes per team, each speaker arguing for at least 20 minutes.

The official language is English, and the dress code is black Western or Indian courtroom formals. Clarifications on the moot proposition may be sought by email to ccrp@nusrlranchi.ac.in until 11:59 PM IST on 18 October 2026.

Members of every registered team that submits memorials on time and presents in the oral rounds receive a certificate of participation. The Winning Team will be felicitated by the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, on 24 December 2026 (National Consumer Rights Day) at New Delhi.
