The International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL), Sanremo, through its Military Department, is holding the 60th Françoise Hampson Advanced Course on International Humanitarian Law (English) from 24 to 28 May 2027 at Villa Ormond, Sanremo, Italy. It is a one-week intensive programme designed to deepen participants' understanding of IHL and its practical application in contemporary operational contexts.
The course is dedicated to the memory of Professor Françoise Hampson, a scholar and practitioner of international humanitarian law, international human rights law and public international law.
The course is intended primarily for experienced military and civilian legal advisers, military officers, and professionals working within governmental and international organisations who already possess an in-depth knowledge of IHL.
In the organiser's words: "Academics and students with a strong interest in developing an advanced understanding of IHL are also welcome to participate, provided they have a sound foundational knowledge of the subject." No nationality restriction is stated, and the official registration form lists Indian among the nationalities.
Given the short duration, participants are expected to have a solid knowledge of IHL principles and rules and to be able to apply them in practice.
The course is conducted in English and reasonable language proficiency is required. There is no simultaneous translation. The Institute's general information note adds that attendees may be refused entry onto a course if their language skills fall short of the level required.
The participation quota is EUR 1,400. It must be remitted before the start of the course by bank transfer or, at the latest, upon arrival in cash or Euro currency cheque. Visa and Mastercard are also accepted on the website or at the Institute.
According to the Institute's general information note, the fee covers course materials, transport from and to Nice Airport, lunches and coffee breaks on working days, reception drinks and the course dinner, and the course photograph and diploma. Accommodation, other meals and incidental expenses are the participant's responsibility; the Institute provides a list of local hotels with special rates and can assist with reservations.
The Official Certificate is released to participants who attend the course in full, after the final session and completion of the course evaluation.
Participants who need a visa for Italy must obtain it before departure; those arriving via Nice Airport need a valid Schengen visa covering both Italy and France. The Institute notes that visa processing may take more than one month and recommends starting as soon as participation is confirmed. No refund is issued to a participant unable to enter the country. Travel and health insurance is the participant's responsibility.
