About the Midyear Meeting

The American Society of International Law (ASIL) hosts a Midyear Meeting every year in late October or early November. The Society describes the meeting as encompassing several events: leadership meetings of the Society's Executive Council and of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law, the Research Forum, and programming for practitioners. Past Midyear Meetings have been held since 2010 in Miami, Los Angeles, Athens and Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Seattle, St. Louis, New York, virtually, Miami, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Cleveland.

2026 Edition: Dates, Venue and Mode

  • Dates: 5 to 7 November 2026 (the ASIL event listing shows a daily window of 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm).
  • Venue: Santa Clara University School of Law, Santa Clara, California, United States.
  • Mode: in person. ASIL has held the Midyear Meeting virtually in the past, but no virtual track has been announced for 2026.
  • Status: registration is open, and the Society states that more information about the 2026 programme is coming soon.

What the Meeting Includes

  • The Research Forum, which ASIL says features cutting-edge international law scholarship by more than 90 authors.
  • A leadership meeting of the Society's Executive Council.
  • A meeting of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law.
  • Programming for practitioners.

This Is an Attendance Opportunity, Not a Call for Papers

The Research Forum authors for the 2026 meeting have already been selected, and the Society is not inviting fresh paper submissions through this page. What is open right now is registration to attend. Readers who want to present at an ASIL forum should watch the Society's separate calls, which ASIL issues well in advance of each meeting.

Registration Rates

  • ASIL Member: USD 250
  • GOV/IO/NGO Member: USD 193
  • Non-Member: USD 360
  • Presenter Member: USD 110
  • Presenter Non-Member: USD 275 (includes one-year ASIL Regular Membership)
  • Student, Member: USD 35
  • Student, Non-Member: USD 70

Who Can Register, Including Applicants From India

ASIL membership is not a condition of attending: the rate card carries non-member and student non-member prices, so anyone can register and pay the non-member rate. The Society states that its members are attorneys, academics, judges, students and others with an interest in international law, that they come from all over the world, and that about 40 percent of them reside outside the United States. There is no citizenship or bar restriction on registration, so an Indian student, academic or practitioner can register on the same terms as anyone else.

Notes for Students

  • The student rates are USD 35 for ASIL student members and USD 70 for student non-members, the cheapest way into the meeting.
  • ASIL student membership costs USD 80 for a year and is free for students at the Society's Academic Partner schools.
  • Students at Academic Partner schools also receive free registration to the Midyear Meeting. No Indian institution appears on the Society's current Academic Partner list, so Indian students should budget for the student rate and, if they want the cheaper tier, for student membership.

What to Budget and Plan For

The registration fee covers the meeting only. Flights to the San Francisco Bay Area, a United States visitor visa, local travel and accommodation in Santa Clara are all on the participant, and none of them are included in the rates above. ASIL has not published a registration cut-off date for the 2026 meeting: registration is live now and the practical last point to register is the meeting itself, so the earlier a visa-dependent applicant books, the safer. The detailed session programme for Santa Clara has not been released yet.
