Overview

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is inviting online recruitment applications for 12 vacancies for the post of Assistant Legal Adviser in the Directorate of Enforcement, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. This is a permanent, General Central Service Group 'A' Gazetted (Non-Ministerial) post advertised under UPSC Advertisement No. 06/2026 (Vacancy No. 26060645213).

If you are a law graduate with litigation experience in criminal or fiscal law, this is a chance to join one of India's premier financial-crimes enforcement bodies and advise the Government on its legal and litigation work. Applications close at 1800 Hrs (6:00 PM IST) on 3 July 2026.

About the organiser

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) functions under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, and is the principal agency responsible for enforcing economic laws such as the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Recruitment for this post is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the constitutional body that handles selection to senior posts across the Government of India.

The role

As an Assistant Legal Adviser, your duties will include:

  • Advising on all legal matters referred by the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India.
  • Looking after Government litigation work.
  • Appearing in courts on behalf of the Central Government, wherever required.
  • Performing administrative and other works as may be assigned.

The post carries an All India Service Liability and is headquartered at the Directorate of Enforcement, Pravartan Bhavan, New Delhi. Selected candidates serve a one-year probation.

Vacancies and reservation

There are 12 vacancies in total, reserved as follows: UR-06, EWS-01, OBC-03, SC-01, ST-01. One of the twelve vacancies is reserved for candidates with a benchmark disability (PwBD), for the disability categories identified as suitable in the official advertisement (including blindness/low vision, hard of hearing, several locomotor disabilities, cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims, specific learning disability and certain multiple disabilities).

Who can apply

Essential qualifications (either route):

  • A degree in law from a recognised university or institute, and three years' experience as an advocate at the bar dealing with criminal laws or fiscal laws; OR
  • A Master's degree in law from a recognised university or institute, and one year of experience as an advocate at the bar dealing with criminal laws or fiscal laws.

Age limit (as on the closing date, 3 July 2026): 40 years for UR/EWS, 43 years for OBC, and 45 years for SC/ST. The age limit is further relaxable up to 10 years for PwBD candidates, with the usual relaxations for ex-servicemen and other eligible categories as set out in the advertisement.

Qualifications and experience requirements are relaxable at UPSC's discretion in deserving cases, as noted in the official notification.

Pay and other details

The post is in Level-11 of the Pay Matrix as per the 7th Central Pay Commission. It is a permanent, General Central Service Group 'A' Gazetted (Non-Ministerial) post with a one-year probation period.

What it costs

Candidates (except Female / SC / ST / PwBD candidates, who are exempt) must pay an application fee of Rs. 25/- using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit or Debit Card, UPI, or internet banking, up to the closing date and time. There is no fee for SC/ST/PwBD/Women candidates of any community; OBC/EWS/Unreserved male candidates must pay the full fee. Applications without the prescribed fee are summarily rejected, and the fee once paid is non-refundable.

First-time UPSC applicants must complete the One Time Registration (OTR) on the portal before filling the application. Read the General Instructions and the full advertisement carefully before applying, and complete fee payment and document uploads well before the deadline.
