About the recruitment

Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla has issued Advertisement No. Rectt.-30/2026 dated 07.08.2026 through its Recruitment Branch, inviting online applications for Category 'A' teaching posts. The advertisement covers 26 Assistant Professor posts in all: 22 across nine subjects at the Post Graduate Centre in Shimla, 2 at the HPU Regional Centre, Dharamshala, and 2 at the University Institute of Technology. Law is one of the advertised subjects, with vacancies at two of the three locations.

Himachal Pradesh University is a NAAC 'A' grade state university established in 1970. Its Faculty of Law has been running since the University's founding year and moved into its own building on the Summerhill campus in 1993.

  • Post Graduate Centre, H.P. University, Shimla-5 — 2 posts of Assistant Professor in Law (ST-1, SC-1)

The advertisement states that the number of posts is tentative and may increase or decrease from time to time. A candidate willing to apply for the same post at a different Department, Institution or Centre must upload and submit a separate application form for each.

Pay

The post of Assistant Professor carries the Pay Matrix at Academic Level 10, Rs 57,700 – Rs 1,82,400.

Eligibility

Essential qualifications, experience and other eligibility conditions for the teaching posts are the same as prescribed under the UGC Regulations, 2018 and the AICTE norms, 2019 (the AICTE norms apply to the University Institute of Technology posts only), together with amendments duly adopted and notified by the University.

The candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test conducted by the UGC or CSIR, or a similar UGC-accredited test such as SLET/SET, or must have been awarded a Ph.D. degree in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for award of M.Phil./Ph.D. degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016. A candidate registered for the Ph.D. programme before 11 July 2009 is governed by the then existing Ordinance or Regulations of the university concerned, and such a candidate is exempt from the NET/SET requirement subject to five conditions: the Ph.D. was awarded in regular mode; the thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners; an open viva voce was held; two research papers from the Ph.D. work have been published with at least one in a refereed journal; and at least two papers based on the Ph.D. work have been presented at conferences or seminars sponsored, funded or supported by the UGC, ICSSR, CSIR or a similar agency. These conditions must be certified by the Registrar or Dean of Studies of the university concerned.

Eligibility in respect of essential qualifications and experience is determined as on 07.09.2026, the closing date for the online application. The benefit of reservation is admissible only to bonafide residents of Himachal Pradesh in the SC, ST, OBC, EWS, BPL, Ex-Servicemen and dependants, WFF, DSP and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities categories, on production of the certificate prescribed by the State Government.

Application processing fee

  • General category, including General Physically Disabled, WFF of H.P., and Ex-Servicemen of H.P. relieved from Defence Services on their own request before completing normal tenure and their dependants — Rs 2,000
  • EWS, SC, ST, OBC and BPL of H.P., including SC/ST/OBC Ex-Servicemen of H.P. relieved before completing normal tenure and their dependants — Rs 1,000
  • Ex-Servicemen of H.P. relieved after completing normal tenure, and Visually Impaired candidates of H.P. — no fee

The fee is paid online by debit card, credit card, UPI or internet banking on or before the closing date for the online application. It is not refunded under any circumstances. Candidates who applied against the earlier Advertisement No. Rectt.-26/2022 dated 21.06.2022 may log in with their existing ID and password to claim fee exemption, but only where the selection process against that advertisement could not be completed; otherwise they must register afresh and pay the full fee.

How to apply

Applications are made online on the University Recruitment Portal at recruitment.hpushimla.in. The online application can be filled from 11.08.2026 (12:00 am) to 07.09.2026 (11:59 pm), after which the link is disabled. Candidates are advised to note down their User ID and password, which are used for all future reference.

The application is not complete online. A candidate for the post of Assistant Professor must also download the submitted online application form and send a hard copy of it, along with all documents supporting the information uploaded, including proof of UGC CARE-listed publications. The hard copy must reach the office of the Deputy Registrar, Recruitment Branch, Gyan Path, H.P. University, Summerhill, Shimla (H.P.)-171005 on or before 22.09.2026 up to 5:00 pm. For candidates residing in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Ladakh, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, the Pangi and Bharmour sub-divisions of Chamba district, the Dodra Kwar sub-division of Shimla district, and Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts, the last date for receipt of the hard copy is 03.10.2026 up to 5:00 pm. If the hard copy does not arrive within the scheduled time the candidature is rejected forthwith, and the University does not accept responsibility for postal delay.

Candidates who had applied against Advertisement No. Rectt.-26/2022 must update their bio-data, qualifications, experience and testimonials against this advertisement and submit fresh hard copies on the same schedule. In-service candidates must route the hard copy through proper channel, may send an advance copy on the schedule above, and must produce an NOC from their department at the time of interview.

Screening and selection

All hard copies received by the prescribed last date are screened by a duly constituted Screening Committee to determine eligibility. Incomplete applications, applications without documents supporting the claims of eligibility, category, qualifications and experience, and applications for posts not covered by the advertisement are rejected summarily, and no correspondence is entertained.

Shortlisting for interview uses the Academic Score Component in Appendix II, Table 3-A (Tally Sheet) as amended of the UGC Regulations, 2018, notified by the University vide Notification No. 3-29/94-HPU(Genl.) Vol-VII dated 4 August 2026. For one vacancy a maximum of 25 candidates is called for interview, with a maximum of 15 additional candidates for every further vacancy, vertical reservation applying as per roster. An interview is held only if at least 5 eligible applications have been received and 3 shortlisted candidates report; where there is more than one vacancy, at least 7 eligible applications must have been received and at least 5 shortlisted candidates must report. Selection is on performance in the interview as per the marks matrix and the recommendations of the Selection Committee, and a candidate must obtain minimum qualifying marks of 50 per cent in the interview components, or 45 per cent for reserved categories, to be considered for selection in order of merit.

Candidates called for interview must bring the original documents supporting the claims made in the online application and those prescribed in the interview call letter, failing which they will not be considered. No TA or DA is admissible for attending the interview.

Points to note

  • The validity of the advertisement is one year from the date of notification.
  • Any addendum, corrigendum or notice is posted only on the University website and recruitment portal, so candidates should check the portal and their personal IDs regularly.
  • The category claimed in the online application form is treated as final; a candidate whose category changes before the closing date must cancel the earlier application and apply afresh, forfeiting the fee already paid.
  • Appointments against posts reserved for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, Ex-Servicemen and dependants, WFF, DSP and PBD are provisional and subject to verification of the category certificate; a false or fake claim leads to termination.
  • The University reserves the right to revise, reschedule, cancel, suspend or withdraw the recruitment process at any time without assigning a reason.
  • In case of any dispute, territorial jurisdiction is restricted to the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and the District Courts at Shimla.
