About MANUU and the Law School

Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a central university established in 1998 with its headquarters at Gachibowli, Hyderabad. Under Section 4 of the University Act, Urdu is the medium of instruction, which is why knowledge of Urdu is a standing requirement for its teaching posts.

MANUU Law School operates from the main Gachibowli campus and runs a 5-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), a 3-year LL.B., a 2-year M.A. in Legal Studies, a 1-year LL.M. with six specialisations, and a Ph.D. in Law. Teaching is built around lectures, problem-based learning, seminars, small-group discussions and clinical work through moot court, trial advocacy, arbitration and mediation competitions.

The engagement

The University has invited applications for the engagement of Assistant Professor (Contractual) on a short-term basis, purely on a temporary basis, for MANUU Law School at the MANUU Campus, Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

The notification records that the number of vacancies is tentative and the University reserves the right to increase or decrease the posts at the time of selection, and to make appointments accordingly if more vacancies exist between the advertisement and the Selection Committee meetings. The University also reserves the right not to fill any of the advertised vacancies if circumstances so warrant.

Essential qualifications

A. (i) A Master's degree (LL.M.) with 55% marks, or an equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed, in a concerned, relevant or allied subject from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.

A. (ii) Besides the above, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or the CSIR, or a similar test accredited by the UGC such as SLET/SET. Candidates who are, or have been, awarded a Ph.D. degree in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 and their amendments are exempted from NET/SLET/SET.

Candidates registered for the Ph.D. programme before 11 July 2009 are governed by the then existing Ordinances, Bye-laws or Regulations of the awarding institution and are exempted from NET/SLET/SET, subject to all of the following being certified by the Registrar or the Dean (Academic Affairs) of the University concerned:

  • the Ph.D. degree was awarded in a regular mode;
  • the Ph.D. thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners;
  • an open Ph.D. viva voce was conducted;
  • the candidate has published two research papers from the Ph.D. work, at least one in a refereed journal;
  • the candidate has presented at least two papers based on the Ph.D. work in conferences or seminars sponsored, funded or supported by the UGC, ICSSR, CSIR or a similar agency.

OR B. The Ph.D. degree has been obtained from a foreign university or institution ranked among the top 500 in the World University Ranking (at any time) by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Times Higher Education (THE), or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The notification adds that NET/SLET/SET is not required for Masters programmes in disciplines for which NET/SLET/SET is not conducted by the UGC, CSIR or a similar UGC-accredited test.

Knowledge of Urdu (compulsory)

As per Section 4 of the University Act, the medium of instruction at MANUU is Urdu, so as a general policy Urdu is compulsory for all teaching posts. The candidate should satisfy any one of the following:

  • be from an Urdu medium school or madarsa; or
  • have studied Urdu as a subject at Class X, or at +2/Intermediate level, or at UG level; or
  • have studied Urdu as one of the subjects at Class X or Class XII from Central or State Boards recognised by the Government of India, or Madrasa Boards of a State Government, or NIOS/State Open Schools recognised by the Government of India (Ministry of HRD); or
  • hold a UG or PG degree in Urdu, or have taken Urdu as one of the subjects at any UGC-recognised State, Central or Private University.

Desirable specialisations and preference

Specialisation is desirable in any of the following: Procedural Laws, ADR, IPR, Cyberlaw, Taxation Law, International Law, International Trade Law, Family Law, Labour Law, Environmental Law, Administrative Law, Land Laws, and Property Law.

Candidates with prior teaching experience and publications will be preferred. They should satisfy the requirements as per UGC and BCI norms.

Remuneration and service conditions

  • Monthly remuneration: salary not exceeding Rs 50,000 per month as per UGC norms.
  • Selected candidates shall be liable to be posted at MANUU headquarters at Hyderabad or at any of the University's institutions in the country, depending on the requirements and exigencies of service.
  • Per Clause 3.3(I) of the UGC Regulations, 2018, NET or an accredited SLET/SET remains the minimum eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor and equivalent positions. Per the UGC Gazette Notification dated 31 July 2023, a SLET/SET score is valid for appointment in the respective State's universities, colleges and institutions only.
  • Retired teachers (Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors) from Government-recognised institutions who are below 65 years are also eligible for the above discipline.

The registration form for the post of Assistant Professor on contractual basis is printed at the end of the official notification and should be filled in and carried to the interview, along with a recent passport-size photograph duly signed by the applicant.
