Overview

The Law, Humanities and Social Sciences (LHSS) Collective's Blog, housed at Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai, is inviting submissions on a rolling basis. There is no fixed closing date, so you can send in your work whenever it is ready. The blog publishes writing that sits at the intersection of law and other disciplines, viewed from a Global South perspective, and there is no submission or publication fee.

What makes this call a little different is that the Collective does not only accept finished articles. You can also pitch a preliminary idea, and the editorial team will help you assess its potential and develop it into a full piece.

About the organiser

Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai (MNLU Mumbai) was established under the Maharashtra National Law University Act, 2014, on 20 March 2014, and is one of India's premier National Law Universities, with a strong interdisciplinary focus on law and allied areas.

The LHSS Collective is the university's interdisciplinary forum at the intersection of law, the humanities and the social sciences. Its blog promotes, publishes and platforms research across disciplines, and supports contributors in fine-tuning their writing, sharpening their research skills and collating sources.

What you can write about

Any content related to the intersection of law with the humanities and social sciences, or that raises awareness about it, whether in theory or in practice, is eligible. Submissions may take the form of:

  • Articles
  • Short notes
  • Book reviews
  • Responses to an existing post on the blog
  • Any other form or manner the Editorial Board deems appropriate

The Board has full discretion over both acceptance and rejection of any submission.

Who can apply

The blog is open to a wide community, so you do not need to be a student to contribute. Submissions are accepted from:

  • Students
  • Legal professionals
  • Teachers and senior academicians
  • Researchers
  • Policy-makers
  • Any member of the legal and humanities fraternity

Co-authorship of up to two authors is allowed.

Originality and similarity rules

Your submission should be original, exclusive and unpublished, and must not be under review on any similar platform. Non-adherence to this rule will result in rejection, regardless of the quality of the piece. Cross-publication is allowed only with prior permission from the original platform of publication.

The blog permits a maximum similarity index of 15%, and no submission may exceed this limit. On acceptance, copyright over the manuscript vests with the blog.

Content and formatting guidelines

  • Word limit: ideally 1,500-2,000 words, unless the Editorial Board decides otherwise. Longer pieces may be published in installments in consultation with the author.
  • Title: Times New Roman, size 14, 1.5 line spacing, in ALL CAPS and bold.
  • Body: Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 line spacing, with single line spacing between paragraphs.
  • References: use hyperlinks within the body. Where a hyperlink is not available, use endnotes in Times New Roman size 10 with single line spacing, following either the Bluebook (20th edition) or APA citation style.
  • File: submit as a Word document (.doc/.docx), named the same as the title of the submission.
  • Anonymity: the document must not contain the author's name, institutional affiliation, or any information that could disclose identity and affect the review.

Submitting an idea instead of a full piece

If you are not ready with a complete article, you can pitch a tentative idea or writing topic first. Email a brief outline (formatted as a formal abstract) to the editorial team, and you may attach a few indicative readings and sources that inspired the idea.

If the editors feel the idea has publication potential, they will respond with the prospect of developing it further, along with suggestions and pointers. You then submit a full article conforming to the guidelines, which goes through the regular review process.

Timeline for review

The Editorial Board aims to respond with an acceptance, rejection, or acceptance subject to modification within 15 days from the date of receipt of your submission. The same 15-day review window applies once you submit a full article developed from an accepted idea.

How to submit

Send your 1,500-2,000 word entry through the official submission form linked below. For questions, or to pitch a preliminary idea as a formal abstract, write to the LHSS Collective's editorial team at lhssblog@mnlumumbai.edu.in.
