Call for Chapters: Women, War and Religion - Faith Under Fire (Edited Book with Routledge Publication/Taylor or Francis)

Faith Under Fire: Women, Religion, and Resistance in Contemporary Conflicts is an edited interdisciplinary volume being brought out by the School of Law, IILM University, Greater Noida. War is almost always told through men, the soldiers, the commanders, the strategists, with women appearing in the margins as victims or bystanders rather than as central actors in the moral, legal and spiritual architecture of conflict. This book refuses that framing.

Drawing on legal analysis, feminist scholarship and real-world case studies from Gaza, Ukraine, Iran and Sudan, the volume asks how religion shapes women's experiences of war, how international humanitarian law protects or fails to protect women in conflict, and how women themselves use faith as a site of resistance, resilience and peacebuilding.

The volume is structured across three thematic parts: theoretical and legal frameworks, contemporary case studies, and pathways toward agency and reform. Expected publication is between January 2027 and March 2027. The call states that publication is with Routledge Publication / Taylor and Francis.

• Religious justifications for war (jus ad bellum, jus in bello) and their gendered consequences
• Gaps in international humanitarian law protection for women
• Faith-based peacebuilding and international law

• Gaza: women, faith, displacement, and survival under siege
• Ukraine: religion, national identity, women as soldiers and displaced persons
• Iran: women's resistance at the intersection of state authority and religious law
• Sudan: religion, ethnic conflict, sexual violence, and cross-border displacement
• Other contemporary conflict zones where religion and gender intersect

• Women-led peace movements and faith-based mediation
• Reforming international law: a gender-just approach
• Incorporating religious and cultural contexts into humanitarian law frameworks
• Women's participation in post-conflict reconstruction and legal drafting

Authors are not limited to the topics listed above. Submissions that engage creatively and rigorously with the book's central theme are welcome. Authors must indicate the sub-theme under which their chapter is being submitted.

• Academicians and faculty: scholars in law, gender studies, international relations, political science and religious studies
• Research scholars: PhD and post-doctoral researchers working on gender, conflict, religion or humanitarian law
• Postgraduate students: LLM, MA and MPhil students pursuing relevant interdisciplinary research
• Practitioners: NGO workers, humanitarian lawyers, peacebuilders and legal aid providers
• Policymakers: government officials, UN agency personnel and human rights practitioners

Step 1: Abstract and cover letter. Authors must submit a cover letter along with their abstract. The cover letter must include:

• Title of the proposed chapter
• Author's name, designation, and institutional affiliation
• Contact details (email and phone number)
• Sub-theme under which the submission is being made
• Abstract of 300 to 350 words with 5 to 7 relevant keywords

Step 2: Registration. All authors must complete the registration process through the official Google Form linked below. In the case of co-authored submissions, each author must register separately. Co-authorship is permitted up to two authors. Queries may be sent to dr.bhavanadhoundiyal@gmail.com.

• Font and size: Times New Roman, size 12
• Line spacing: 1.5 for body text
• Abstract: 300 to 350 words with 5 to 7 keywords
• Footnotes: Times New Roman, size 10, single spacing
• Citation style: APA 7th Edition, with bibliography or references at the end
• Headings: chapter title in ALL CAPS, bold, centred; Level 1 subheading bold, roman, left-aligned; Level 2 subheading bold, italics, left-aligned; Level 3 subheading roman, italics, left-aligned
• Page numbers: bottom centre, sequential
• File format: Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)
• Co-authorship: maximum 2 authors, separate registration required

• Overall similarity index, including AI-generated content, must be less than 5 percent
• No single source may exceed 2 percent similarity
• AI-generated content must not exceed 5 percent of the total submission
• Authors must submit a full Turnitin report along with the final chapter
• Papers exceeding these thresholds will not be considered for publication

The call does not state a submission or registration fee. It records that any cost of publication or article processing charge (APC) will be communicated by email upon selection of the manuscript. Authors should confirm the amount with the editors before committing.
