The Association for Law, Property & Society (ALPS) will hold its next annual meeting in person at the Cardiff School of Law and Politics, Wales, from May 27th to 30th, 2027. ALPS describes itself as an open and welcoming international organization of scholars and teachers engaged in interdisciplinary research on property law, policy and theory, and on the role property plays in social structures, human relationships and ecology.
The academic portion of the conference takes place on Friday, May 28th and Saturday, May 29th, with concurrent panels and plenary sessions running all day on both days. The dates also include an optional pre-conference Cardiff City Arcade Walking Tour on the afternoon of May 27th, an evening reception that day, and an optional post-conference day trip to Black Mountain College, Talgarth, Brecon on May 30th.
Presentations on any subject related to property law and the practices that shape property norms and institutions are welcome. Possible organizing themes include, but are not limited to:
ALPS keeps a strong commitment to international and interdisciplinary diversity, and topics reflecting that commitment are encouraged. Participants work in common law, civil law, Indigenous laws, international law, transnational law and mixed legal traditions.
ALPS welcomes scholars at all stages of their careers, from around the world and across disciplines. It accepts presentations of projects at all stages of development, from recently published works to early-stage ideas.
ALPS accepts both individual paper submissions and proposals for fully formed panels, usually 3 to 4 presenters. Panel proposals may also use other formats such as author-meets-reader sessions, workshops, topical discussion sessions and pedagogical sessions, or may integrate films or other multimedia outputs.
Each submission should include an abstract of no more than 250 words, sent through the ALPS Conference Proposal Submission Portal. The portal also asks for the name of the submitting scholar, the scholar's institution, a contact email, a list of five keywords and, where appropriate, the same information for any coauthors. For a fully formed panel, submit all the abstracts and the contact details of all participants in the portal.
In general, each presenter is limited to one research paper presentation per conference, although some exceptions may be made for special discussion groups or other unique thematic panels. After reviewing and accepting submissions, ALPS groups accepted papers and panels by theme. Each panel session lasts approximately 90 minutes. Each presenter has 10 to 15 minutes for the presentation and an additional 5 to 10 minutes for audience questions.
Accepted abstracts will be included in a long program for participants and may be made publicly available. If you do not want your abstract included, say so at submission and only the title will be listed.
All meeting attendees must register, whether or not they are presenting. To secure a place on the final conference program, all presenters must register before March 31, 2027. The call does not state a registration fee; more information will be provided in acceptance notifications.
Questions about the conference can be sent to conference@alps-law.org. Further information on accommodation, travel, the field trip and the welcome reception will be posted on the registration site and the ALPS Annual Meeting webpage as it becomes available.
