About the meeting

The Association for Law, Property & Society (ALPS) will hold its next annual meeting in person at the Cardiff School of Law and Politics, Wales, from 27 to 30 May 2027. The academic portion of the conference takes place on Friday 28 May and Saturday 29 May 2027, with concurrent panels and plenary sessions running all day on both days.

The conference dates also include an optional pre-conference Cardiff City Arcade walking tour on the afternoon of 27 May, an evening reception that day, and an optional post-conference day trip to Black Mountain College, Talgarth, Brecon on 30 May.

ALPS describes itself as an open and welcoming international organisation of scholars and teachers engaged in interdisciplinary research covering all aspects of property law, policy and theory, and the role property plays in social structures, human relationships and ecology.

Themes

Presentation submissions on any subject related to property law and the practices that shape property norms and institutions are welcome, from common law, civil law, Indigenous laws, international law, transnational law and mixed legal traditions. Possible organising themes include, but are not limited to:

  • Land use planning, zoning, water law, environmental law and energy law
  • Mortgages and financing, land titles and real estate development
  • Legal issues related to housing and homelessness, and the right to housing
  • Cultural property, historic and heritage preservation, and property of Indigenous peoples
  • Comparative perspectives on property law, and race and gender issues in property
  • Intellectual property rights, property theory and takings law

ALPS maintains a strong commitment to international and interdisciplinary diversity, and topics reflecting that commitment are encouraged.

Who can submit

The call is open to scholars and teachers at all stages of their careers from around the world and across disciplines. ALPS welcomes projects at all stages of development, from recently published works to early-stage ideas.

Submission formats and guidelines

  • Individual paper submissions, and proposals for fully formed panels (usually 3 to 4 presenters).
  • Panel proposals may use alternative formats such as author-meets-reader sessions, workshops, topical discussion sessions, pedagogical sessions, or may integrate films or other multimedia outputs.
  • Each submission needs an abstract of no more than 250 words, plus the submitting scholar's name, institution, contact email, a list of five keywords and, where appropriate, parallel information for any coauthors.
  • For a fully formed panel, submit all abstracts and contact information for all participants within the portal.
  • In general, each presenter is limited to one research paper presentation per conference.
  • Accepted abstracts will be included in a long programme and may be made publicly available; indicate on submission if you prefer to be identified by title only.
  • Panel sessions last about 90 minutes; each presenter has 10 to 15 minutes plus 5 to 10 minutes for audience questions.

Registration and fee

All meeting attendees must register, whether or not they are presenting. The call does not state the registration fee. Conference registration will open on the conference website by late January or early February 2027 and will close on 31 March 2027; presenters must register before 31 March 2027 to secure a place on the final programme. Information on accommodation, travel, the field trip and the welcome reception will be provided on the Cardiff University registration site and the ALPS Annual Meeting webpage as it becomes available.
