Call for Papers: ANZSIL International Economic Law Interest Group Workshop 2026 (Online, 27 November 2026)

The International Economic Law Interest Group (IELIG) of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law (ANZSIL) has issued a call for papers and invitation to participate in its 2026 workshop. The workshop will be held online via Zoom on Friday 27 November 2026. Its aim is to provide an informal setting for discussion of topical issues and works in progress.

The keynote speaker is Professor Jarrod Hepburn, University of Melbourne, who will speak on ‘The Flexible Sources of Investment Law’. Professor Hepburn received the ANZSIL Article Prize this year for ‘The Legal Justification for the Doctrine of Legitimate Expectations in International Investment Law’ (2025) 36 European Journal of International Law 43, and the workshop includes a panel on his work.

ANZSIL is the learned society for international law in Australia and New Zealand, based at the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy, Australian National University, Canberra. Its International Economic Law Interest Group was established in 2011 as a forum for those interested in international economic law, especially the international regulation of trade, investment, intellectual property and monetary law. The group covers all areas of international economic law and its implementation in domestic law, both theoretical and practical, and aims to stay relevant to government, practitioners and academics alike.

Paper proposals may be on any topic within the work of the IELIG, that is, any area of international economic law, including the international regulation of trade, investment, intellectual property and monetary law, and its implementation in domestic law. Both theoretical and practical work is welcome, and works in progress fit the workshop’s informal format.

PhD students, early career practitioners and academics are especially encouraged to submit a proposal. ANZSIL membership is open to all those with an interest in international law, including legal practitioners, academics, government officials, civil society organisations and students, so applicants from India can join. Membership costs AUD 100 for one year (AUD 200 for two years, AUD 400 for five years); full-time students can apply as student associates for AUD 20 a year.

The call does not mention any registration or presentation fee for the workshop. ANZSIL membership, if you apply as a member, is paid separately (see above).

All speakers are invited to submit their paper after the workshop to the Australian Year Book of International Law or the New Zealand Yearbook of International Law for possible publication.

ANZSIL members and MFAT, DFAT and Attorney-General’s Department staff are also invited to attend the workshop even if they are not presenting a paper. The ANZSIL events calendar lists the workshop from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on 27 November 2026; the page does not state the time zone.
