About the ILI Law Review

The ILI Law Review (ILILR) is the online, biannual, blind peer reviewed and refereed law journal of The Indian Law Institute, New Delhi (a deemed university located opposite the Supreme Court of India). It carries e-ISSN 0976-1489 and is published in Summer and Winter issues; the archive on the journal page runs from 2016 to the Summer 2025 issue, along with two special issues (Covid, 2020; Non Humans, 2023). The journal's Guidelines and Publication Policy describe it as recognised in the UGC-CARE list (Group D, S. No. 42) and as an eco-friendly, open access student journal that anyone can read on the Institute's website.

The Editorial Board has announced on the journal page that the Review is accepting submissions, and invites manuscripts across categories including Articles, Case Comments, Book Reviews and Acts/Bill comments. The Editorial Committee is headed by Editor-in-Chief Sr. Prof. (Dr.) V.K. Ahuja, with Sr. Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar and Dr. Arya A. Kumar as Editors.

Theme and categories of submissions

ILILR accepts themes across legal subjects and interdisciplinary matters; there is no prescribed theme. The following categories are accepted:

  • Articles and research papers
  • Case comments
  • Book reviews
  • Acts/Bill comments and legislative comments

Eligibility and authorship

  • Submissions are open to all; the policy does not restrict authorship by designation.
  • A maximum of two authors is allowed. Co-authored papers must give details of both authors.
  • Papers must be original. Work already published in other journals or anthologies, or under consideration elsewhere, must not be submitted, and the author undertakes not to submit the paper elsewhere until the journal's decision is made.
  • The authorship and designation stated in the cover letter are treated as final; the author must inform the Editorial Board of any change in designation while the paper is being processed. No changes are entertained after publication.
  • The Indian Law Institute is the sole copyright owner of all published material.

Word limits and formatting

  • Articles: 6,000 to 12,000 words, inclusive of footnotes.
  • All other categories (case comment, book review, bill comment, legislative comment and so on): 2,000 to 6,000 words, inclusive of footnotes.
  • An abstract of not more than 150 words must be included.
  • All citations go in footnotes (not endnotes), following the ILI Rules of Footnoting (ILI Citation Style, linked below).
  • Numbers below 100 are spelt out unless they are percentages; the first person is to be avoided; all pages numbered; uniform date format (for example, August 15, 1947).
  • Quotations within a sentence in double quotation marks; a quotation within a quotation in single marks; quotations longer than three lines set out as an indented block without quotation marks, introduced with a colon and referenced in a footnote.
  • In the main text, the words section and article are neither abbreviated nor capitalised; in footnotes they are abbreviated (for example, The Constitution of India, art. 30; The Indian Penal Code, s. 42).

Screening and review process

Each draft is screened in three phases:

  • Internal screening for general appropriateness, conceptual and theoretical fit, and compliance with citation style, formatting and word limits.
  • Plagiarism test: the maximum permitted similarity index is 10 percent, and authors are asked to ensure this before submitting.
  • Blind peer review by an expert, who evaluates relevance, comprehensiveness, original contribution, language and coherence; the review report is shared with the author.

The whole process takes a minimum of 6 to 8 months depending on the influx of submissions. Authors are informed at the end of each stage if modifications are required, and final acceptance or rejection is subject to all three tests.

Fee

The Guidelines and Publication Policy do not mention any submission or publication fee, and the submission procedure (email with a covering letter and the signed Annexure 1) has no payment step. Authors who need confirmation should write to the editorial inbox before submitting.

How to submit

Submissions are accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis; the policy states that there is no deadline as such. Email the manuscript, addressed to the Editor, ILILR, to ililawreviewjournal@gmail.com with:

  • A covering letter stating the name of the author(s), institutional affiliation, contact details and the topic of the paper.
  • A duly signed and dated copy of Annexure 1 (the declaration at the end of the Guidelines and Publication Policy PDF), confirming originality, no conflict of interest and no prior or concurrent submission.
