About the journal

The Melbourne Journal of International Law (MJIL) describes itself as Australia's premier generalist international law journal. It is a peer-reviewed academic journal based at Melbourne Law School, the University of Melbourne, and publishes two issues per annual volume, typically released in July and December. Its coverage extends beyond public international law to private international law, the intersection of international law with domestic law, global governance and associated areas of transnational law. It will also consider interdisciplinary work which substantially contributes to international legal scholarship.

The call: Volume 28(1)

The Editors of MJIL are inviting submissions on areas of interest in international law for volume 28(1). For consideration for inclusion in the print issue of volume 28(1), authors should submit on or before 31 January 2027. MJIL also accepts submissions on a rolling basis and publishes advance electronic copies of articles prior to print publication.

Who can submit

The call is addressed to authors generally and states no restriction on nationality, institution or career stage, so authors based in India may submit. In the journal's words, "Any author wishing to have their article, commentary, case note or review considered for publication in MJIL must send their manuscript as a Microsoft Word document to submissions-mjil@unimelb.edu.au, along with a copy of the signed Publication Policy." Authors unsure whether a topic is eligible may contact the Editors.

Types of submission and word limits

  • Articles: in the vicinity of 10,000 words (including an abstract of up to 250 words); shorter and longer articles are also accepted, up to 18,000 words.
  • Case notes: in the vicinity of 5,000 to 7,000 words.
  • Commentary: in the vicinity of 5,000 to 7,000 words.
  • Book reviews: in the vicinity of 2,500 words.
  • MJIL also accepts review essays and think pieces.
  • Footnotes are not included in word counts. All submissions must be fully referenced and relevant for an international audience of legal academics, students, policymakers and practitioners.

Submission guidelines

  • Submit as a Microsoft Word document, together with a signed copy of MJIL's Publication Policy.
  • Articles should include an abstract of no more than 250 words.
  • Authors are encouraged to follow the Australian Guide to Legal Citation (AGLC).
  • MJIL requires exclusive submission: the work must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere at the same time.
  • By signing the Publication Policy, authors assign copyright in the published work to the Melbourne Journal of International Law Inc.

Review process

Articles, case notes, commentaries and think pieces undergo double blind refereeing involving at least two experts in the area. The Editors endeavour to decide whether a submission will proceed to refereeing within four weeks of receipt. Book reviews and review essays are reviewed solely by the Editors. Referees are sought only after the signed Publication Policy has been returned.

MJIL Prize

All submissions published in volume 28(1) will be considered for the MJIL Prize. The financial sum attached to the Prize is AUD $1000.

Fee

The call and the Publication Policy do not mention any submission or publication fee.
