Call for Papers: University of Pennsylvania Asian Law Review [HeinOnline & Westlaw Indexed], Volume 22 (Rolling Submissions)

The University of Pennsylvania Asian Law Review (ALR) is a student-edited legal journal at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, Philadelphia. The journal describes its mission as providing a forum for the study of the law on the Asian continent, and it publishes articles and hosts events within the Penn Carey Law community on recent legal developments in Asia.

The journal has broadened its scope several times since its founding. It was first published in 2004-2005 as the Chinese Law and Policy Review, widened its focus to the larger East Asian region in the 2007-2008 cycle as the East Asia Law Review, and now covers Asia as a whole as the Asian Law Review. Its most recent published volume is Volume 21.

The Asian Law Review has announced that it is now accepting submissions for Volume 22. In its own words, the journal seeks scholarship focusing on the entirety of Asia in any legal context, and looks forward to a diverse pool of submissions that will help it produce one of its most holistic publications to date.

Submissions should be related to the law, its practice, implementation or implications in Asian nations. The journal does not restrict itself to a single country or a single branch of law.

• Legal issues concerning Asia, broadly construed
• Scholarship covering the entirety of the Asian continent, in any legal context
• Original research that adds to a broad and holistic understanding of Asian legal issues

The journal states that submissions are accepted from anyone with an interest in Asian law, including but not limited to legal academics, legal professionals and students. There is no restriction by nationality, jurisdiction or institutional affiliation, so scholars, practitioners and students based in India are eligible to submit.

There are no length requirements, and submissions may be of any type. The journal specifically invites:

• Articles
• Essays
• Regulation reviews
• Book reviews
• Other relevant scholarly contributions

Authors should observe the following requirements set out by the journal:

• Submissions must be in English
• Manuscripts must be properly cited, and Bluebook format for footnotes is greatly appreciated
• Every submission should include an abstract, a keywords section and the author's CV

Once the journal and the author have agreed to publish a piece, ALR editors check it for accuracy and conform the citations to the latest edition of the Bluebook.

The journal offers two submission routes. Manuscripts may be submitted through the Asian Law Review Scholastica portal, or sent directly to the journal email at upennalr@law.upenn.edu. The journal states no submission fee or publication charge for authors.

Submissions are reviewed and decisions rendered on a rolling basis until early September 2026, or until the journal reaches capacity. The journal notes that it typically reviews submissions on a rolling basis from late Spring until late Fall of each year, so early submission is advisable.

Accepted pieces are published on the journal's website and distributed to its subscribers and to academic databases. The journal confirms that all issues of ALR are published on Westlaw and HeinOnline.
