About the call

The International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law (IAAIL) invites proposals for workshops and tutorials to be held in conjunction with ICAIL 2027 in Vienna. The workshop and tutorial days are Monday 5 July and Friday 9 July 2027, the opening and closing days of the conference. Proposals are due 11 December 2026.

Workshops and tutorials provide a forum for exploring emerging research directions, interdisciplinary challenges, specialised applications and foundational techniques within artificial intelligence and law and related disciplines.

Workshop tracks

Workshops encourage interactive discussion, the exchange of novel ideas, and active community-building beyond the traditional AI and law core. A proposal may fall under one of the following tracks.

  • Novel: emerging topics expected to gain importance in AI and law, for example AI in support of legal methodology, law-based AI safety, generative AI verification, or technical governance.
  • Cross-over: the interplay and convergence between AI and law and other fields, for example NLP, computational social science, legal design, ethics and philosophy, or regulatory engineering.
  • Established: successful, recurring workshop series that address core specialised sub-fields of AI and law.
  • Challenge, shared task or hackathon: open competition, benchmarks or shared evaluation tasks, for example legal retrieval, statutory reasoning or contract analysis, with pre-defined datasets and evaluation metrics.
  • Interactive or Dagstuhl-style: non-traditional formats focused on roadmapping, debates and intensive working sessions.

Tutorials

Tutorials offer comprehensive background and hands-on instruction on a specific topic relevant to the AI and law community. A tutorial should cover a cohesive theme and be accessible to researchers, practitioners or doctoral students, for example neuro-symbolic legal reasoning, formal logic frameworks, or agentic AI for law.

What a proposal must contain

Proposals should be 2 to 4 pages in plain PDF format (LNCS or a standard template) and contain enough detail for the programme committee to evaluate their quality and feasibility. Every proposal must include the following.

  • Title, acronym and type: state clearly whether the submission is a workshop, naming its track (novel, cross-over, established, challenge or interactive), or a tutorial, with a concise title and an acronym.
  • Topic, objectives and motivation: a detailed description of the topic, its core goals, its significance and its appropriateness for ICAIL 2027, and why it is timely and relevant.
  • Target audience and community reach: the expected profile of participants (computer scientists, legal scholars, industry practitioners, PhD candidates), estimated attendance, potential key contributors and a publicity strategy. Established workshops should give past figures such as submissions, acceptance rates and attendance. Challenges should outline how the dataset is prepared, following the FAIR principles, and how it is evaluated.
  • Format and duration: half-day or full-day; fully onsite, or hybrid (partly onsite, partly remote); the proposed structure, for example keynotes, peer-reviewed presentations, breakout discussions, panels, hands-on tutorials or a hackathon; a tentative timeline for paper submissions or participation requests and for acceptance notifications; and specific plans to engage the audience beyond traditional paper presentations.
  • Organising team and programme committee: names, affiliations, short bios, email addresses and web pages of the main organisers, preferably a team balanced across career stages and institutions. For workshops, list potential and confirmed programme committee members; proposers are strongly encouraged to ensure diversity in gender, geographic location and institutional representation, and to have at least 50% of PC members confirmed at submission. For tutorials, give an outline of the materials, slides or code repositories to be shared with participants.
  • Organisational requirements: any special equipment or room setup needed beyond standard projectors and microphones, for example poster boards, extra whiteboards, breakout spaces, or a high-speed network for hands-on tutorials.

Review criteria

Proposals are evaluated by the ICAIL 2027 committee on four points.

  • Relevance and alignment: fit with the broader scope of ICAIL and of AI and law research.
  • Timeliness and impact: potential to advance the state of the art or to spark new interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Interactive format: the degree to which the event uses dynamic, engaging formats rather than purely static paper presentations.
  • Organisational feasibility and diversity: the diversity and experience of the organising team and the programme committee.

Important dates

  • Proposal submission deadline: 11 December 2026
  • Notification of proposal acceptance: 7 January 2027
  • Individual workshop website and call for papers online: 1 February 2027

Responsibilities of organisers

  • Event web page: organisers must maintain an up-to-date website with the call for papers, the schedule and the programme committee.
  • Reviewing and proceedings, if applicable: workshop organisers manage their own review process and are responsible for arranging electronic publication of the proceedings, for example via CEUR-WS.org.
  • In-person attendance: at least one main organiser of each workshop or tutorial must register for ICAIL 2027 and attend in person to chair the session. Workshop participants are required to register for ICAIL 2027 through the conference registration system.
  • Cancellation: workshops that receive too few submissions or miss registration deadlines may be merged or cancelled at the discretion of the chairs.
