Saveetha School of Law, SIMATS is holding Cine Lex Critica 2026, a National Movie Legal Review Competition styled by the organisers as the III Edition, on 15 and 16 September 2026 at its Chennai campus. The competition asks law students to review a film through a legal lens rather than a cinematic one: to interrogate how justice is portrayed, where ethical dilemmas sit, and where the law is applied, distorted or ignored inside the narrative.
The brochure is explicit that liberty to criticise comes with responsibility. Participants are expected to critique boldly but keep their arguments reasoned, with the caution that freedom of speech is not a licence. Defamatory, obscene, indecent or scandalous language is prohibited, while fair and constructive criticism is encouraged.
What the Organisers Expect
Teams are asked to connect the film's storyline with the relevant legal framework, ranging from domestic legislation to principles of international law and jus cogens. Reviews must be legally grounded and supported by references to relevant statutes, sections, landmark judgments and case law where applicable.
The stated objectives are to make students interpret and critique cinema through a legal perspective, to highlight effective portrayals of legal principles in films and web series, to draw out the creative potential of law students through movie review, and to spread legal awareness through popular cinema. The organisers note that an unconventional legal argument or an insight others missed is what separates a winning review.
Eligibility and Team Composition
- Open to students pursuing three-year or five-year undergraduate law courses, or postgraduate law courses, from a recognised law college or university in India.
- Each team must have three members, and all three must be students of the same institution.
- An institution may send a maximum of three teams.
- Participants must carry their college identity card for registration on the day of the competition.
Rounds and Format
Preliminary round (15 September): each team gets 10 to 12 minutes, depending on the schedule, to present a legal review of one movie from the prescribed list, aided by a PowerPoint presentation. The time may be split among the three members as the team chooses. There is no prescribed PPT format so long as it is self-explanatory, and the PPT itself carries weight in the marks.
Semi-final (16 September): the top 8 teams from the preliminaries qualify. Each team is given a separate video clip of up to 5 minutes, 5 minutes to prepare a legal review including watching time, and 5 minutes to present before the judges.
Final (16 September): the top 3 teams from the semi-finals advance to a buzzer round whose rules are disclosed on the day of the event, with questions tied to the objectives of the competition. The highest scorer is declared the winner.
The medium of the competition is English only. Movies and clips used by the organising committee may be in any Indian language with English subtitles. Reviews that stray outside the legal framework will not be entertained.

Marking Criteria
Preliminary round (100 marks): understanding of the movie 20; understanding of legal provisions and principles 20; ability to connect law and movie 30; usage of PPT presentation 10; clarity and flow in presentation 10; ability to answer questions 10.
Semi-final round (100 marks): understanding of the movie clip 20; understanding of legal provisions and principles 20; ability to connect law and movie 30; clarity and flow in presentation 10; ability to answer questions 20.
Registration, Fee and PPT Submission
Teams first make a provisional registration through the official Google Form. The registration fee is Rs. 300 per team, and registration is complete only on successful payment and submission of the final registration form. The fee is non-refundable under any circumstances.
The last date for registration is 5 September 2026. The PowerPoint presentation must reach the organising committee at cinelexcritica2026.ssl@gmail.com on or before 12 September 2026.
On confirmation of provisional registration, teams receive a Team Code by email, which becomes their sole identity throughout the competition. Teams must not disclose their college identity to other teams or to the judges at any point, except to the organising committee on demand; non-compliance can lead to disqualification.
Dress Code and General Terms
Decent formal attire with blazers is mandatory. Male participants: black formal trousers, white shirt, black blazer and black formal shoes. Female participants: black formal trousers with white kurta and black waistcoat or black dupatta, or a white formal shirt with black blazer, with black formal shoes.
No accommodation is provided to participating teams. Teams competing in Cine Lex Critica 2026 may not take part in any other event held on the same day under the Law Fest. The organising committee may alter or amend any rule or schedule, and will intimate registered teams. The decision of the organising committee and of the judges is final and binding.
