About the Position

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, has issued Advertisement No. Q/PF/575/35/2026-II dated 10th July 2026, inviting applications for engagement of 01 (One) Consultant (Lawfare Issues) in the Legal & Treaties-I (L&T-I) Division of the Ministry at New Delhi. The engagement is for a period of one year, extendable depending on performance, mutual willingness and requirement, on a purely contractual basis.

Nature of Duties

  • Provide legal inputs on matters relating to lawfare issues, including universal jurisdiction principles and discussions under the International Law Commission
  • Collect and analyse foreign countries' domestic laws permitting such jurisdiction
  • Map and monitor lawfare cases filed by foreign Governments abroad across jurisdictions
  • Support the Division in handling international disputes involving universal jurisdiction
  • Prepare legal briefs and background notes relating to lawfare issues
  • Analyse the legal implications of domestic legislation and international developments on lawfare issues
  • Coordinate with relevant Ministries and agencies, including MEA and MHA, to ensure coherence in India's position on lawfare issues
  • Undertake other legal tasks assigned by the Head of Division, including drafting notes, preparing talking points and contributing to capacity-building initiatives

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be an Indian national
  • Post Graduate degree in International Law (LL.M.) from a reputed/recognised institution in India or abroad; preference to candidates specialised in International Humanitarian Law/Criminal Law
  • Minimum 2 years' work experience
  • Must be a registered law practitioner in India
  • Age group of 25-35 years as on the last date of submission of application
  • Desirable: prior work experience in the Government of India

Remuneration & Entitlements

Remuneration will be commensurate with the experience and profile of the selected candidate, subject to a maximum of Rs. 10,00,000 (Rupees Ten Lakh only) per annum, less applicable taxes, and will remain unchanged during the term of engagement. The engagement is purely contractual and does not confer entitlement to Provident Fund, Pension, Gratuity, medical benefits, seniority, promotion, HRA or any other benefit available to regular Ministry employees. The position is full-time (0900-1730 hrs, Monday-Friday). Travel, accommodation and per-diem costs incurred in the course of official duty will be borne by the Ministry as per its guidelines.
