About the position

Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar has issued a re-advertisement for the post of DPIIT-IPR Chair under the SPRIHA Scheme (Scheme for Pedagogy and Research in IPRs for Holistic Education and Academia) for the Financial Year 2026-27, vide Advertisement Reference No. GNLU/AC/FP-03/2026 dated 04 August 2026.

The Chair is instituted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. At GNLU the incumbent works under the guidance of the Head, Research and Publication Cell, in coordination with the GNLU Centre for IPR, and under the overall direction of the Director and the Registrar.

Candidates who have already applied pursuant to the earlier Advertisement Reference No. GNLU/AC/FP-02/2026 dated 16 May 2026 need not apply again; their earlier applications will be considered for the present process. Such candidates may, however, submit a fresh application form with supporting documents within the stipulated time if they wish to add further qualifications, experience, publications or credentials.

  • Tenure: Initially one year, extendable on a year-to-year basis subject to performance. An individual may serve as IPR Chair for a term of up to 5 years from the date of appointment and no longer.

The contractual appointment confers no right to renewal, extension or conversion into a permanent appointment, and ends on the date of expiry stipulated in the appointment letter.

Eligibility criteria

A candidate must satisfy any one of the following:

  • Has served as, or meets the eligibility criteria for serving as, a Professor or an Associate Professor as prescribed by the UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualification for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education, 2018, and possesses sufficient teaching and research experience in Intellectual Property Rights; or
  • Is an IP attorney who has practised IPR law for a minimum of ten years, or any other professional who has gained significant recognition in the field of IPR with no less than ten years of experience in that field; or
  • Is a retired official of the IP Office under CGPDTM holding a doctorate degree, with a minimum of five years of experience working at Level 12 or above, such as Controller of Patents and Designs, Registrar of Trade Marks and Geographical Indications, or Registrar of Copyrights.

Any individual above the age of 70 years is not eligible for appointment as IPR Chair. Eligibility is determined as on the last date of receipt of the application.

Activities and functions of the Chair

In consultation with DPIIT, the incumbent is expected to:

  • Introduce IPR as a credit-bearing course at the undergraduate level. This is mandatory for all IPR Chairs and compliance is necessary to claim grants from DPIIT.
  • Introduce postgraduate degree and diploma courses on IPR for specialisation in IPR fields, and exclusive curricula on IPR for doctoral and post-doctoral studies.
  • Introduce certificate courses, distance learning courses and online courses on IPR.
  • Provide full-time and part-time scholarships and fellowships for research in the legal, economic, socio-legal, social, technological and entrepreneurial aspects of new and emerging IPR areas, nationally and internationally.
  • Set up a repository of IPR-related information and case studies at the University, in both physical and electronic form.
  • Prepare a repertoire of resources, toolkits, guidance and instruction materials for IPR courses across levels, for direct teaching as well as distance and online modes, including commissioning suitable resource persons. Studies commissioned by the Department are to be conducted by the IPR Chair, with a synopsis or concept note submitted beforehand.
  • Facilitate the filing of IPR applications such as copyrights and patents, build mutual relationships with academic institutions and industry, and enrol Ph.D. scholars in the field of IP as per UGC/AICTE or institutional norms.

The minimum targets laid out in Annexure A to the SPRIHA Guidelines must be met, failing which DPIIT may cancel the IPR Chair.

Application fee

Rs 1,000 for candidates from the unreserved category and Rs 700 for candidates from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Differently-abled (physically and visually differently-abled) categories.

The fee must be paid by Demand Draft drawn in favour of "Gujarat National Law University", payable at Ahmedabad. No other mode of payment is accepted, and an application form submitted without the requisite fee will be summarily rejected.

How to apply

The application form is available on the GNLU website under the Careers webpage. Applications must be submitted in the prescribed format, along with a recent passport size photograph, the demand draft and the relevant supporting documents.

The complete application must reach the following address by 5:00 PM on or before 25 August 2026:

  • Applications must be sent through Indian Post (Registered Post or Speed Post) or Courier. Forms submitted in person will not be accepted.
  • Self-attested copies of certificates and mark-sheets from SSC onwards relevant to the qualifications acquired must be enclosed. Originals should not be sent, but must be produced at the time of the selection process.
  • Candidates already in Government, Semi-Government, PSU or educational institution service must apply through proper channel. An advance copy may be sent directly to the University, in which case the No Objection Certificate in the prescribed format or the forwarded original application must be produced at the selection process, failing which the candidate will not be allowed to participate.
  • Incomplete applications, or applications in a format other than the prescribed one, will not be entertained.

It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure the application reaches the University within the stipulated timeline. No correspondence is entertained regarding delays in submission, non-shortlisting for interview, or interview results.

Selection process and other conditions

  • The University will intimate eligible shortlisted candidates after the last date of application, by email at the address given in the application form.
  • Selection and nomination will be carried out in concurrence with the guidelines issued by DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
  • No TA or DA is paid for attending the selection process. A shortlisted candidate unable to attend the selection process on the prescribed date and time will not be considered later, for any reason.
  • Selected candidates must join on the date determined by the University, which reserves the right not to appoint a selected candidate who cannot join on the designated date.
  • Canvassing in any form results in disqualification. Persons dismissed by the Union or a State Government, a local authority or a government corporation are deemed ineligible.
  • The University may verify antecedents and documents at any time. If information is found to be fake or material facts have been suppressed, the application or service will be terminated.
  • The University reserves the right to cancel or amend the advertisement, to insert corrections or additions before the last date (published on the University website only), and not to fill the advertised vacancy if circumstances so warrant. The decision of the University authorities is final and binding.
