The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development (ILSPSD) is a two-year (24 months, full-time) programme funded by the European Union and run by six European degree-awarding partner institutions with a network of 30 associate partners. It combines international law with politics, sustainability and security studies. The application platform is now open for the second intake of ILSPSD (2027-2029).
The consortium is coordinated by Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany. The other degree-awarding partners are the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), the University of Glasgow, the Université libre de Bruxelles, the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and the University of Tartu.
Students study in three or more countries. The programme also offers summer schools, legal clinics, guest lectures and contact with practitioners.
Applicants whose first language is not English, and whose undergraduate degree was not completed in English in one of the countries on the official list of Countries with English as an Official Language and the Language of Instruction in Higher Education, must show C1 proficiency with one of: IELTS Academic 7.0; TOEFL iBT 5 (95 for tests taken before 21 January 2026); Cambridge English Advanced (CAE); or Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE). Results must be no more than two years old at submission and must be uploaded with the application; tests cannot be submitted after the deadline. India does not appear on the official country list (attached as the brochure on this post), so Indian applicants should plan for one of these tests. The Duolingo English Test is not accepted. The Glasgow track requires IELTS 7.0 with no subset below 6.5 or equivalent.
The official Tuition Fees page lists EUR 24,000 for the programme (EUR 12,000 per year, published as the 2026-2028 rate; fees are set annually and fixed for each cohort), the same for EU and international students. Fees cover tuition only; all students meet their own accommodation and travel costs between partner universities. Self-funded students pay a non-refundable EUR 500 deposit by 31 May of the intake year, deducted from the first tuition payment, and can pay in one, two, four, six or twelve instalments a year. Holders of an ILSPSD tuition-fee-only scholarship (fee waiver) pay 50% of these amounts. The official pages do not mention an application fee.
Documents must be in English or another consortium language (Estonian, French, German, Portuguese or Spanish), with certified English translations otherwise; apostille is not required. Scholarship applications are scored on academic merit (50%), the personal statement with relevant experience (40%) and references (10%). Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed in February or March 2027.
Apply online through Leuphana University of Lüneburg's ILSPSD application portal: use the scholarship form (the Apply button on this post) to be considered for an EMJM scholarship, or the separate self-funded form. Scholarship applications close on 4 January 2027 at 23:59 CET (5 January 2027, 04:29 IST). Self-funded applications close on 31 March 2027 at 23:59 CEST (1 April 2027, 03:29 IST). Read the official Step-by-Step Application Guide first and save the link to your application. The consortium advises applying well before the deadline because technical problems with uploads cannot be ruled out.
