The European Society of International Law (ESIL) is hosting an online session of its ESIL Conversations series titled "Violations of peremptory norms and erga omnes obligations: What role for international responsibility?". It takes place on 13 October 2026, from 15:00 to 16:30 Rome time (18:30 to 20:00 IST), online.
The ESIL Conversations are a series of online events through which ESIL aims to contribute to the discourse on international law. The second series, "Responsibility of States and International Organizations in Times of Accountability Gaps: 25 Years of ARSIWA and 15 Years of ARIO", critically examines how contemporary practice has exposed legal gaps and revealed new, uncodified tendencies in the law of State and international organisation responsibility, calling for a reassessment of the solutions adopted by the International Law Commission and of their current role and future development. This is the second session of the series.
The panel will explore the role of international responsibility in addressing violations of peremptory norms and obligations erga omnes. It will examine the particular implications of such violations and consider how the law of international responsibility responds when fundamental obligations of the international legal order are at stake.
Moderated by ESIL Board members Giulio Bartolini and Patrycja Grzebyk. Panel:
Students, researchers, academics and practitioners interested in public international law, State responsibility, jus cogens and erga omnes obligations. Registration is open to the public through the ESIL page; Indian participants can join online.
The official ESIL page lists no registration fee; attendance is through a public Microsoft Teams event registration.
Register through the Microsoft Teams events link ("Register Here") on the official ESIL event page. Registration closes on 13 October 2026 at 14:00 Rome time (17:30 IST).
