The Interest Group on International Courts and Tribunals of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) is hosting an online discussion of Dana Burchardt’s monograph The Authority of International Courts: A Behavioural Framework. The session takes place on Wednesday, 30 September 2026 at 14:00 CEST and is listed by ESIL as an online open event for which registration is required.
The Book Under Discussion
Drawing on law, political science and behavioural research, the book builds a framework for understanding how relationships of authority between international courts and their audiences are formed, maintained and contested. Those audiences include states, NGOs, individual applicants and domestic courts.
The discussion will work through the book’s two case studies, the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and use them to reflect more broadly on the dynamics that shape international judicial authority.
