Fully Funded Global South Visiting Scholar In-Residence Program 2027-28 at Peter A. Allard School of Law, UBC, Vancouver (Honorarium approx. CAD 10,000)

The Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, is inviting applications for the 2027-28 cycle of its Global South Visiting Scholar In-Residence Program. The law school seeks to host an exceptional scholar from the Global South for a short-term, fully funded visiting scholar residency.

The goals of the programme are to foster academic exchange, international connections and new research directions among Allard faculty members and international partners, to support and expand the research strengths of the law school, and to contribute to and strengthen the resources of international partners.

The successful Global South Visiting Scholar (GSVS) will spend a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of three months in residence at the Allard School of Law. Longer visits, up to three months, are encouraged. For this cycle, the scholar must be able to complete the residency between January and April 2028, and should arrange to be in residence during all or part of Allard Law’s winter term (January to early April 2028) so as to take an active part in the law school community.

During the visit, the scholar is expected to give lectures, hold sessions with faculty members and graduate students, and conduct independent research.

• Applications will only be considered from faculty currently appointed at institutions located in the Global South.
• For this competition, “Global South” includes all countries on the OECD list of countries eligible for official development assistance (the list adopted by the UBC Office of Global Engagement). India is on this list, so faculty at Indian institutions may apply.
• The ideal candidate is an early to mid-career scholar.

The successful scholar will receive:

• Funding for travel to Vancouver.
• Accommodation on campus that includes a meal plan.
• An honorarium of approximately CAD 10,000.
• Shared access to office space at the law school, library privileges, and a faculty host for the visit.

There is no application fee.

• A record of research excellence: a superior record of scholarly contributions to the field (publications, community-based research, Indigenous research collaborations, reports or law reform work, among others), meaningful engagement with the communities affected by the research, and a demonstrated capacity to shape the direction of research and thought.
• Strength and feasibility of the proposed research: originality and significance, together with the objectives and timeline of the proposed research and other activities.
• Potential for linkages with Allard Law: the ability of the proposed research to catalyse significant and wide-ranging scholarly discussion and intellectual engagement within the law school.

The evaluation takes into account the factors affecting research time and activities at many Global South institutions. Applicants with smaller or less developed research records will not be discounted; they will be assessed on their potential to use the time and space at Allard Law to develop their research.

Email a faculty member working in your area, attaching your research plan and curriculum vitae. Applications must include:

• The completed application form (pages 3 and 4 of the call), covering the name, title, institution, contact details and proposed dates of visit, proposed research activities during the residency (up to 1,500 words), a tentative title or subject area for a faculty or public lecture (up to 250 words), and proposed law school engagement activities (up to 500 words).
• A curriculum vitae.
• A cover letter describing the candidate’s scholarly record and objectives in visiting the Allard School of Law, and identifying two possible faculty hosts from the law school’s faculty.
• The names and contact information of two referees.
