Utkal University, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar has issued an advertisement for the temporary engagement of Guest Faculty in the rank of Assistant Professor. The notice carries No. Estt.I/1291(P)/R-590/2026 and is signed by the Registrar; it was uploaded to the University's own recruitment page in August 2026 as "Advertisement of Guest Faculty".
The engagements are against sanctioned posts permitted vide Higher Education Department Letter No. 4477/HE dated 01.02.2024. Applications in the prescribed format, with the supporting documents, must reach the Office of the Registrar on or before 21 August 2026 (5:00 P.M.) by Speed Post or Registered Post only.
Utkal University is Odisha's oldest university and the seventeenth university established in India. The advertisement also records that any addendum or corrigendum will be published only on the University website, so applicants should re-check that page before posting their application.
The advertisement covers 14 Assistant Professor guest faculty vacancies across eight departments. Two of them are in law:
The remaining twelve, listed for completeness, are: A.I.H.C.A. (02), Botany (01), Commerce (02), Library & Information Science (01), Psychology (04) and Zoology (02).
The envelope must be super-scribed with the post applied for, so a law candidate has to decide between the University Law College post and the LL.M. post and mark the envelope accordingly.
The advertisement narrows the field sharply. Under the head "Category of Faculties to be engaged", it states that the vacancy of Assistant Professor will be filled up by engagement of retired Assistant Professors or guest faculties of the rank of Assistant Professor.
Educational qualification is stated only as "As per UGC Guidelines, 2018", that is, the UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff, 2018. The application form asks separately for NET/JRF, M.Phil. and Ph.D. particulars, and for teaching and administrative experience.
Read the eligibility clause closely before spending on speed post. A candidate who has never held an Assistant Professor rank appointment does not sit comfortably inside the category the University has defined.
Payment is per class, with a monthly ceiling:
If more than 40 classes are taken in any month, the faculty member must undertake an administrative assignment given by the University from the subsequent month onwards. If fewer than the prescribed classes are taken, the honorarium may be paid proportionately or the shortfall adjusted against the workload of the immediate next month.
No other allowance or financial benefit is allowed. All statutory taxes, including income tax, are the sole responsibility of the engaged faculty, and TDS will be deducted by the University at the applicable rates.
The engagement runs for a maximum of one year at a time, or until the vacancy is filled in a regular manner, whichever is earlier. Continuation is subject to satisfactory performance at a quarterly review.
The advertisement is explicit that the arrangement is purely temporary and that there shall be no regular, contractual or ad-hoc appointment against it under any circumstance. Engaged retired faculty may continue teaching until they attain 70 years of age, subject to periodical review.
Ten days of leave are allowed in a year. Guest faculty are not eligible to hold administrative or financial responsibilities. The University also reserves the right to withdraw the notification in part or in full without assigning any reason, and to fill the posts as and when required.
Beyond classroom teaching, the advertisement lists the academic work expected of engaged faculty, including launching continuing education programmes in new and emerging areas, organising or attending national and international conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops, undertaking knowledge-based advisory or consultancy assignments in accordance with University guidelines, accepting invitations to deliver guest lectures at other institutions, and participating in academic and research committees at the University and elsewhere when required.
Candidates must submit the filled-in application form downloaded from the University website, along with one set of self-attested photocopies of marksheets and certificates:
The form itself also calls for areas of specialisation, M.Phil. and Ph.D. thesis titles, and a separate sheet of publications with paper title, journal or book name, volume and issue, year, ISSN or ISBN and co-authors, with self-attested copies attached.
Download the advertisement and the prescribed application form (Annexure-I, printed inside the same PDF) from the University's recruitment page. Complete it, attach the self-attested documents, super-scribe the envelope with the post applied for, and send it by Speed Post or Registered Post only to the Office of the Registrar, Utkal University, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar - 751004, Odisha.
The wording is that the application "must reach the Office of the Registrar on or before 21.08.2026 (5.00 P.M.)". That is a receipt deadline, not a posting deadline. An application dispatched on 20 or 21 August but delivered on 22 August is late on the face of the advertisement, so post it several days early and keep the speed post tracking receipt.
The advertisement prescribes no application fee, and the document checklist contains no demand draft or fee instrument; the only cost to the applicant is the postage.
