About the fellowship

The HKU Law Outstanding Early Career Visiting Fellowship Scheme of the Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong, enables outstanding early career legal scholars to visit the Faculty. During their visit, fellows are hosted by, and concurrently hold a visiting fellowship at, one of the Faculty's research centres.

Purpose of the visit

  • Giving lectures, seminars or conference presentations in the Faculty; the topics are determined by the Faculty in consultation with the visiting fellow; or
  • Conducting joint research with teachers in the Faculty, or research on topics for which materials are more easily available in Hong Kong than at the fellow's home institution; in this case the scholar must submit a detailed research proposal with the application.

Eligibility

Scholars based outside of Hong Kong with exceptional research achievements in any field of law are eligible to apply, provided they are within their first 15 years of academic employment at the time of their application. Preference will be given to early-to-mid career scholars. The Faculty states that “scholars based outside of Hong Kong” are eligible, so law academics based in India within their first 15 years of academic employment may apply.

What the fellowship covers and duration

  • Each fellowship will normally cover economy airfare to Hong Kong and back, and accommodation expenses during the stay in Hong Kong.
  • Each fellow should normally visit the Faculty for 1-4 weeks; the duration of the visit is stated in the letter of award.
  • Publications arising out of the fellowship must acknowledge the support of the fellowship.

Application documents

  • CV
  • Statement of purpose
  • Cover letter setting out why the applicant meets the criteria for appointment, how the applicant's research falls within the remit of at least one of the Faculty's research centres or the research of members of the Faculty, and the intended period of visit
  • Confirmation that the applicant is within the first 15 years of academic employment at the time of application
  • A detailed research proposal, if the visit is for research
  • A declaration of whether the applicant has secured, applied for, or will apply for other sources of financial support for the proposed visit
