About the internship

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is advertising an Intern - Human Rights opening on the UN Careers portal (Job Opening 265994, listed as a Candidate Pool - Intern opening) for its office in Bangkok. The intern reports to the assigned manager in SEARO, the OHCHR regional office based in Bangkok.

The advertisement states that the intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people, to help empower people to realise their rights, and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.

What the intern will do

Daily responsibilities depend on the intern's background and may include a focus on human rights and migration, climate change and environment, early warning, communication and public information. According to the advertisement, duties may include:

  • monitoring and analysing human rights developments and trends in South-East Asia;
  • researching and drafting internal and external notes and reports within the assigned area, including daily news updates on the human rights situation in the region;
  • supporting SEARO's engagement with the UN human rights mechanisms, including Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies;
  • assisting with the organisation of workshops and seminars, maintaining information and resource tools and updating website information;
  • taking part in and taking notes at meetings and conferences, and other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Eligibility

The advertisement states that applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, but a field of study closely related to the type of internship is required. Applicants must be:

  • a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. programme or equivalent; or
  • a graduate who has completed a Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. programme.

Applicants must indicate which criterion they meet and attach proof to the application; an official certificate will be required at a later stage. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. The ability to draft news articles or social media posts and to design surveys and polls is desirable.

The posting sets no nationality restriction. It states: "Selected candidates who are not Thailand citizens, will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and approved employment authorization allowing them to undertake the internship." Indian students and graduates who meet the academic criteria may therefore apply.

Duration, location and pay

The internship is designed to be full-time for 6 months and in person in the Bangkok office.

The advertisement does not state any stipend or remuneration. Visa and employment authorisation for Thailand are the selected candidate's responsibility.

The United Nations does not charge a fee at any stage of the recruitment process (application, interview, processing or training).
