The IBFD Frans Vanistendael Award for International Tax Law is an annual award that promotes and celebrates scientific research of the highest standards. An international jury judges the submitted publications and selects the work that makes the most outstanding contribution to the development of international tax law.
This is a prize for already published work, not a call for new manuscripts. The 13th edition covers works published in English in 2026, and the award will be conferred in May 2027. As of the 12th edition (2026) it is conferred in two categories of equal prestige and monetary value:
IBFD is headquartered at Rietlandpark 301, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and publishes the Bulletin for International Taxation and the World Tax Journal. The award page lists the winners of all twelve previous editions; the 12th edition was won by Qiang Cai (Articles and Book Chapters) and Ricardo Andre Galendi Junior (Books).
The official rules state: "Any natural person may apply; there are no restrictions regarding nationality, residence, or institutional affiliation." Candidates need not hold an academic position, so Indian authors, researchers and practitioners are eligible. Publications authored by IBFD employees or members of the Jury are not eligible, subject to the exceptions in the rules.
Submissions can be made by anyone, not just the original authors: either as an application by the author(s) or as a nomination by any third party. Each individual may submit up to three publications per award category.
The dotation is EUR 10,000, plus a flat amount for travel and accommodation expenses incurred by attending the award ceremony (if the ceremony takes place on IBFD's premises). The monetary value is equal for both categories. In the absence of further indication, the ceremony takes place at the IBFD Headquarters, Amsterdam. The Jury may withhold one or both awards and may grant an honourable mention.
Evaluation is based solely on academic merit. Jury members first individually rank submissions, then shortlist (three for Books, six for Articles and Book Chapters), then decide by unanimity or by more than half of the Jury. The 2027 jury: Philip Baker, Joachim Englisch, Na Li, Pasquale Pistone (Chairman), Jennifer Roeleveld, Luis Schoueri, Dikshit Sengupta, Stephen Shay and Maria Teresa Soler Roch.
The submission window runs from 1 June to 31 December 2026; early or late submissions will not be considered. Submissions must be made through the online form for the relevant category on the IBFD award page:
The type of submission (application or nomination) must be clearly indicated. For nominations, if a digital version is not available, the nominator must help provide one; a publication that is not available will not be considered. No submission fee is mentioned in the official rules.
