ICON·S, the International Society of Public Law, invites applications for the fifth edition of its winter/summer school for junior scholars, to be held in Sydney, Australia, from 17 to 27 May 2027. Earlier editions were held in Sydney in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The school is convened by Prof. Rosalind Dixon (former Co-President of ICON·S) and jointly organised by ICON·S through its Committee on Community and Engagement, the UNSW Resilient Democracy Lab, the UNSW Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law, the NUS Law Centre for Asian Legal Studies, the Centre for Comparative and Public Law at HKU Law, the uOttawa Public Law Centre, Northwestern Pritzker Law School, ICON·S Aus-NZ and the Manos Foundation.
The school will admit approximately twelve to fifteen junior scholars. It offers:
Applications are open to all junior scholars. A junior scholar is defined as an aspiring career academic who self-identifies as such and/or whose terminal degree for entering the profession has not yet begun, is in the process of being completed, or was earned within the previous five years (excluding career breaks).
There is no application fee. The organisers will provide accommodation for the duration of the school (individual rooms with shared bathrooms; a limited number of rooms with private bathrooms for participants with medical needs or special circumstances, subject to availability), visa fees and some meals in Sydney.
A limited number of travel bursaries may be available for those who have not been able to access funding from their home institution or third-party organisations or foundations. Applicants should state in the application whether they wish to be considered for a bursary and whether their participation depends on it. Priority will be given to scholars from the global south.
Submit the following through the ICON·S Oxford Abstracts form (create an account or log in with Google or LinkedIn):
The deadline is 31 October 2026, 11.59 pm US Eastern Time.
Participants will be selected by a special ICON·S sub-committee by reference to principles of racial and geographic diversity and gender parity. A select number of applicants may be invited for interviews before a final decision. Decisions will be notified by the end of November 2026 to the name and email address associated with the applicant's Oxford Abstracts account.
Admitted participants must apply for an Australian visa before purchasing travel. Invitation letters for visa purposes will be provided promptly after notification, and the process to request one will be set out in the acceptance notification. Applicants are asked in the form whether they need such a letter.
