Law Clerk at High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati (4 Posts, Rs 35,000/month)

The High Court of Andhra Pradesh functions from Nelapadu, Amaravati, in Guntur District. Law Clerks are engaged on contract by the Registry to assist the Hon'ble Judges on the judicial and academic side of their work, under guidelines framed by the Hon'ble the Chief Justice in exercise of the power conferred by Article 229 of the Constitution of India.

By Notification ROC.No.579/2026-RC dated 24 July 2026, the Registrar (Recruitment) has invited applications for four (04) posts of Law Clerk, on contract basis, to assist the Hon'ble Judges of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. The engagement is governed by the Guidelines for the appointment of Law Clerks on contract to the Hon'ble Judges of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati, issued vide Gazette Notification No.88 dated 18 July 2020 and the amendments made from time to time. The notification records that the number of vacancies may increase or decrease depending upon the exigencies.

• Reading case files and preparing the case, including the case summary and notes and a chronology of dates and events
• Identifying facts and issues, and questions that may arise or may need to be addressed
• Research work including case law and articles for judicial orders, and study material for conferences, seminars and meetings

• A degree in law from a recognised university, having studied a five-year regular stream after 10+2, or a regular curriculum degree course after 10+2 followed by a three-year regular law degree from a university or an affiliated college
• Candidates studying in the fifth year of the five-year integrated law course, or the third year of the three-year law course after graduation, may also apply, subject to furnishing proof of acquiring the law qualification before taking up the assignment
• The law degree must have been passed within the two years immediately preceding the date of the notification
• The candidate must not have attained the age of 30 years as on 1 January or 1 July preceding the last date fixed for submission of applications
• The candidate must be a citizen of India
• The candidate must not be pursuing any other regular course of study, profession or occupation which may require them to be away from their place of work during the engagement
• A candidate enrolled as an advocate, if selected, must suspend practice before joining and keep the suspension alive until demitting the Law Clerkship

Each Law Clerk is paid a consolidated amount of Rs 35,000 (Rupees Thirty Five thousand only) per month as honorarium, enhanced from Rs 25,000 vide G.O.Rt.No.514 of the Law Department dated 16 June 2022. Law Clerks are not entitled to any other allowances or perks. The engagement is normally for a period of one year from the date of assignment and, subject to the approval of the Hon'ble the Chief Justice, may be extended for a further period not exceeding four years. A Law Clerk is not treated or deemed to be an employee of the High Court Service or of the Judicial or Judicial Ministerial Service, and the assignment may be discontinued even before the completion of one year, without notice, if the services are found unsatisfactory.

Selection is based on merit. Eligible candidates have to appear for a viva voce at Amaravati at their own expense on the date, time and venue intimated to them, and the High Court reserves the right to conduct the viva voce physically or through online mode depending on the prevailing conditions. The selection is made by the Hon'ble the Chief Justice through a committee nominated by the Chief Justice, and the list of candidates selected by the committee is subject to the approval of the Hon'ble the Chief Justice. Prominent law schools and universities may also be invited to recommend their alumni.

Applications must be made in the proforma prescribed in the Annexure to the notification, which can be downloaded from the High Court website, and must carry a latest passport-size photograph duly attested by a Gazetted Officer or the Principal of the law college. The duly filled application, along with attested copies of the documents relating to proof of age and academic qualifications, must be sent to the Registrar (Recruitment), High Court of A.P. at Amaravati, Nelapadu, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, PIN 522239, under Registered Post or Speed Post, with the postal cover subscribed "Application for the post of Law Clerk". The notification prescribes no application fee.

Applications must reach the Registrar (Recruitment) on or before 4 August 2026 by 5.00 PM. The notification states that applications received after the due date, incomplete applications, and applications without testimonials and certificates will not be entertained, and that the High Court will not be responsible for any postal delays and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard.

Law Clerks mark attendance in the register kept in the room of the Assistant Registrar (Admn.) before proceeding to the chambers of the Hon'ble Judge to whom they are attached, and are entitled to casual leave at one day for every completed month of assignment, with deductions from the monthly honorarium on a pro-rata basis beyond 12 days in a calendar year. They may not take up any other employment or engagement, full time or part time, during the assignment, though with the consent of the Chief Justice or the Committee they may appear for the Junior Civil Judge selection examinations, and with permission may revoke the suspension of practice to sit the All India Bar Examination. A dress code applies, and Law Clerks are permitted access to the court halls and the Judges' Library.
