The Office of the Advocate General, Karnataka is inviting applications for the post of Law Clerk-cum-Research Assistant for the year 2026-27. This is a contractual engagement of one year, open to fresh law graduates and final-year law students who are keen on litigation and public policy. There are 20 vacancies, a consolidated honorarium of Rs 25,000 per month, and the expected date of joining is 17 August 2026. The Office of the Advocate General, Karnataka advises the State Government on all its legal affairs and defends legislation and public policy before the Supreme Court of India, the High Court of Karnataka, and various tribunals and judicial fora. It is one of the most important constitutional law offices in the state, and working here gives you exposure to high-stakes matters that shape governance and public interest.
As a Law Clerk-cum-Research Assistant you will work on a wide variety of cases, with a particular focus on research for matters impacting public policy. You will be mentored by senior litigators and will directly assist the Learned Advocate General, Additional Advocates General, State Public Prosecutors, Government Advocates, High Court Government Pleaders, or Public Prosecutors as required.
Your work will include carrying out legal research on issues assigned to you, attending court, making notes, and drafting memoranda. The role also involves regular interaction with government officials and other public servants. Note that work may sometimes fall on court holidays or beyond regular court and office hours, depending on requirements.

Each Law Clerk may be paid a consolidated Rs 25,000 per month as stipend/honorarium, subject to statutory deductions. No other allowances are payable, and the engagement is not regular employment with the office.
The first 15 days from reporting are a probation period for which no stipend/honorarium is paid; the appointment letter is issued after probation, subject to satisfactory performance. The appointment is on a contractual basis for one year and may be extended by a maximum of one more year on the recommendation of the Learned Advocate General. Law Clerks may be granted leave of absence up to a maximum of 8 days in a calendar year. The headquarters is the Advocate General's Office, High Court of Karnataka Building, Bengaluru.
Eligible candidates who have been recommended (by the Principal of their law college or the President of the Bar Association where they practise) will be called for an online or physical interview at the Office of the Advocate General for Karnataka, Bengaluru, at their own cost, on a date and time to be notified. The selection committee will be nominated by the Learned Advocate General, and selection is based on merit assessed through the interview. The final list is subject to the approval of the Learned Advocate General. A waitlist may be maintained to fill vacancies arising from termination or resignation.
