Law Researcher / Research Associate at High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi (25 Posts, Contractual, Rs 40,000 per month)

The High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi has issued Advertisement No. 01/Recruitment Cell/2026 (dated 5 September 2026) inviting applications for the engagement of 25 Law Researchers / Research Associates on a contractual basis. Under the Court’s scheme, one Law Researcher / Research Associate is attached to the Hon’ble Chief Justice and one to each Hon’ble Judge, to assist in judicial and administrative work.

The engagement is for a term of one year, which may be extended once for one more year. The maximum period of engagement is two years. It is a purely temporary, contractual engagement and does not confer any right to regular employment under the High Court or the State Government.

Law Researchers work under the direct control of the Hon’ble Judge to whom they are attached, in court, in the court library or at the Judge’s residential office. The scheme lists the following duties:

• Reading case files and preparing case summaries, notes and chronologies that give the Judge a complete view of the matter, including the legal questions and the latest case law on either side
• Searching case law, articles and other material, and assisting in the preparation, correction and proofreading of judgments
• Attending court during hearings and preparing notes of arguments with research on citations
• Maintaining a record of judgments delivered by the Judge with the points of law decided, and maintaining statistical reports
• Assisting in the preparation of speeches and academic papers and with important conferences
• Becoming acquainted with court procedure, filing of cases and the movement of cases before and after filing

The job is full-time. Researchers may be required to attend the residential office of the Judge and to work on gazetted, local, public or weekly holidays, with the schedule mutually adjusted. The headquarters is the High Court at Ranchi.

• Age: not less than 21 and not more than 28 years as on the date of advertisement
• Qualification: any fresh Law Graduate or Post Graduate from a university or college recognised by the Bar Council of India
• Final-year students: students in the 5th year of a 5-year law course or the final year of a 3-year law course may apply; final selection is subject to passing the final-year LL.B. examination before engagement
• Marks: only candidates who have passed all examinations in the first attempt with at least 60% aggregate marks are eligible
• Not eligible: candidates pursuing a postgraduate law degree or any other degree or programme requiring compulsory attendance
• Recommendation: a practising lawyer must be recommended by a designated Senior Advocate; any other applicant must be recommended by the Head of the last law school, college or university attended
• Candidates familiar with computers will get preference in selection

Each Law Researcher / Research Associate will be paid a consolidated honorarium of Rs 40,000 per month, or such higher amount as the State Government may prescribe from time to time. No other allowance or remuneration is payable, and the engagement does not make the candidate a permanent or other employee of the High Court or the State Government.

• Researchers may not practise as lawyers or take up any other full-time or part-time employment or engagement during the term
• They may not appear before the Judge they were attached to for one year after the engagement ends, nor in any case handled by that Judge on which they worked
• Casual Leave is available as applicable to State Government employees; no other leave
• The engagement can be ended by the Court on one month’s notice or one month’s salary in lieu; a researcher leaving early must give two months’ notice or the residuary tenure, whichever is higher
• Strict confidentiality applies during and after the engagement, and a written undertaking is required before joining
• On successful completion of the term, a certificate is issued by the Registrar General

• Matriculation certificate as proof of date of birth
• Marksheets of all semesters or years of law graduation (and postgraduation, if applicable)
• Provisional or original degree certificate of law graduation (and postgraduation, if applicable)
• Recommendation by a designated Senior Advocate or by the Head of the last law school, college or university attended
• Computer certificate, if any

Fill it in the prescribed format, then email a scanned copy of the filled form along with scanned copies of all enclosures as a single PDF file (not exceeding 10 MB) to rgjhc.jhr@gmail.com. Applications are accepted from 7 September 2026 to 28 September 2026 only.

• Write your name, date of birth and father’s name exactly as in the Matriculation / 10th certificate
• Applications with an illegible or blurred photograph or signature will be rejected
• No printout or hard copy needs to be sent to the High Court, and no advance copy is accepted
• No changes to the application are entertained after the closing date

The advertisement does not prescribe any application fee.

Selection is based on merit and interview, conducted by the Hon’ble Chief Justice or a committee appointed by the Chief Justice. The names of shortlisted candidates and the interview schedule and venue will be announced later on the official website of the High Court. Shortlisted candidates will be called individually by email; a candidate who does not receive the call letter may contact the Registrar General at least two days before the scheduled interview. A select list and a waiting list will be maintained. No TA/DA is paid for attending the interview, and canvassing in any form leads to rejection.
