About the internship

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. Under requisition 24290, the ICC is inviting applications for a legal affairs internship in the Secretariat of the Assembly of States Parties (SASP) at its duty station in The Hague, Netherlands.

The Secretariat provides the Assembly, its Bureau and its subsidiary bodies with administrative and technical assistance under the Rome Statute, including substantive servicing such as legal and secretariat services, preparation of documentation, meeting reports and analytical summaries, and advice on legal and substantive issues relating to the work of the Assembly.

Duties and responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Legal Officer of the Secretariat, the intern will:

  • Support the team with legal research and analysis, contributing to the preparation of legal advice, studies and documentation.
  • Take notes during meetings and assist in preparing reports of meetings of the Assembly's subsidiary bodies, summarising discussions and highlighting key points and perspectives.
  • Assist in drafting and editing correspondence, letters and notes.
  • Provide support with ad hoc tasks for the legal team as requested.

Eligibility and qualifications

  • Education: a first level university degree from an accredited university in law, preferably with specialisation in international or humanitarian law, or being in the final stages of relevant studies. A very good record of academic performance is expected.
  • Experience: placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their careers, so practical experience is not essential, though relevant experience may be an asset. Applicants must have less than three years of relevant full-time professional experience.
  • Skills: ability to adapt to multicultural and multilingual environments, strong teamwork, very good oral communication and drafting skills, and good computer (including Microsoft Office) and research skills, including electronic databases.
  • Languages: proficiency in English or French is required; working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish is an asset.
  • Nationality: the ICC states that, unless otherwise specified in the vacancy, candidates from non-State Parties are eligible to apply for an internship. This vacancy specifies no restriction. Nationals of non-represented and under-represented countries at the ICC are encouraged to apply.

Duration

The vacancy lists a contract duration of 6 months. Interns are required to work full time for a period of preferably six months, with dates agreed before commencement.

Remuneration

The ICC states that internship and visiting professional placements are unfunded. The Court cannot provide any remuneration, nor reimburse expenses incurred before, during or after the placement. Applicants must be able to support themselves for the duration of the internship.

Documents required

  • A completed 'Duties and Responsibilities Form' (step 1 on your eRecruitment profile page).
  • Motivation letter (maximum 400 words).
  • Two reference letters (one academic).
  • Scanned copies of university degrees and/or diplomas.
  • Scanned copies of official academic transcripts stating courses, subject results and completion date.
  • One short essay on a subject relevant to the work of the Court (maximum 750 words, single spaced, typewritten).

How to apply

The ICC only accepts applications submitted through its career portal and does not accept email applications. Register with ICC eRecruitment, complete your candidate profile, open requisition 24290 (Internship - Secretariat - Assembly of States Parties) and click 'Apply', then submit the application following the system prompts.

The deadline for applications is 31 December 2026, midnight The Hague time (this falls at 4:30 am IST on 1 January 2027; apply by 31 December IST to be safe). Due to the volume of applications received, only successful applicants will be contacted by the Court.
