Overview

Tata Trusts is inviting applications for the role of Legal Officer, Litigation & Real Estate for its Mumbai office. This is a full-time engagement for a period of three years, reporting to the Head, Legal. If you are an experienced litigator with a strong grounding in disputes management and property law, this is a chance to lead end-to-end legal matters for one of India's oldest and most respected philanthropic organisations.

About Tata Trusts

Tata Trusts is among India's oldest, non-sectarian philanthropic organisations, working in areas such as healthcare, education, nutrition, water and sanitation, livelihoods, and the arts and culture. Through its allied organisations and field programmes, the Trusts support large-scale development work across the country, and its legal team handles the disputes, contracts, and property matters that arise from this wide footprint.

The role

The position involves end-to-end handling of disputes and property-related matters for the organisation and its allied organisations, along with supporting the legal team on advisory and contractual matters. The work spans three broad areas:

Disputes management.

  • Draft, review, and finalise pleadings, applications, notices, petitions, replies, written submissions, and other litigation-related documentation.
  • Manage and oversee all litigation, arbitration, regulatory proceedings, and pre-litigation matters.
  • Develop and advise on litigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external counsel to ensure a comprehensive approach.
  • Track and monitor ongoing cases, hearings, and compliance with litigation timelines.
  • Prepare periodic litigation reports and updates for senior management.

Real estate legal matters.

  • Conduct or oversee title diligence of properties, provide assessments, and suggest measures to protect the organisation's interests.
  • Review and assess title documents, approvals, permissions, and related property records.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and finalise leave and licence agreements, lease deeds, and sale/transfer deeds.
  • Provide and implement strategy on property-related disputes, possession issues, encroachments, and related litigation.
  • Coordinate with external counsel, local advocates, surveyors, and government authorities.
  • Advise stakeholders on property laws, land regulations, registration requirements, and regulatory approvals, and maintain updated internal records of property documents.

Legal advisory and drafting.

  • Provide legal advice to internal stakeholders and functions.
  • Conduct legal research and provide opinions on applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify potential legal risks and provide strategic advice on risk mitigation.
  • Draft and review agreements, MoUs, and other legal documents.

Who can apply

  • Bachelor's degree in law (LL.B.) from a reputed university in India.
  • 7 to 10 years of post-qualification work experience.
  • Preference for candidates who have worked in a well-recognised law firm.
  • Strong background in disputes management, litigation, real estate matters, and labour and employment laws.
  • Strong understanding of procedural requirements before different forums including the City Civil Court, High Courts, and Regulatory Bodies.
  • Experience of handling matters before the Charity Commissioner will be preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle disputes, contentious matters, and real estate matters.

You will also be expected to bring excellent drafting, research, communication, and stakeholder-management skills, an analytical and solution-oriented mindset, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and across cross-functional teams.

Compensation & terms

This is a full-time employment engagement for a period of three years, based in Mumbai and reporting to the Head, Legal. Tata Trusts has not published a salary figure in the public notification, so do confirm the compensation and benefits directly during the selection process.
