Overview

Legis Sententia - the official student-run blog of the Department of Law, University of Calcutta - is inviting submissions on a rolling basis. Run by the Journal and Seminar Committee (JSC), the blog is looking for insightful, well-researched and engaging pieces from students, academics and professionals. Selected pieces are allotted a DOI on publication, so this is a clean way to get your legal writing online with a citable identifier - and there is no fee to submit.

About the blog and the organiser

Legis Sententia (Latin for 'the opinion of the law') is the official undergraduate student-run blog of the Department of Law, University of Calcutta. It was launched in August 2019 by the Journal and Seminar Committee and is operated through the Medium publishing platform.

The blog exists to help law students stay engaged with the contemporary and evolving facets of the legal landscape. It encourages students to dissect complex legal issues, comment on recent judicial developments and contribute meaningfully to academic and public discourse, all under the guidance of a dedicated student Editorial Board.

Theme

Submissions are accepted across a wide range of topics within the broader field of law. The Committee welcomes pieces on any relevant and contemporary issue, and especially values writing that offers unique perspectives not widely covered elsewhere. There is no narrow sub-theme to box you in - pick an issue you can write about with depth and originality.

What you can submit

  • Legal Articles - not exceeding 3,000 words (exclusive of citations).
  • Editorials - not exceeding 1,500 words (exclusive of citations).

A few ground rules from the Committee:

  • Your submission must be original and unpublished.
  • It should not be under concurrent consideration on any other publication platform.
  • AI-generated content will be rejected.
  • Exceeding the word limit is discouraged, but minor transgressions may be overlooked depending on the quality of the submission.

Who can apply

The call is open to students, academics and professionals. If you can write a well-researched, original legal piece, you are welcome to submit - you do not need to be a University of Calcutta student.

Formatting and referencing

Please format your submission as follows before you send it:

  • Font: Times New Roman
  • Body font size: 12
  • Citation font size: 10
  • File format: Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)
  • File naming: "Author's Full Name-[Blog Title]"
  • Body line spacing: 1.5
  • Citation line spacing: 1.0
  • Page margins: 1 inch (top, bottom, left and right)
  • Citation format: Harvard Bluebook, 20th Edition

What it costs and what you get

There is no submission or publication fee. Selected pieces are published on the Legis Sententia Medium blog, and a DOI is allotted to selected pieces on publication - giving your work a permanent, citable identifier.

Deadline

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis - there is no fixed cut-off date, and you can submit whenever your piece is ready. The date shown here is a placeholder; treat it as an open, ongoing call.
