Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna, through CIRF and its DPIIT-IPR Chair, is organising a one-day National Workshop on the Working of the National Intellectual Property Policy, 2016, marking the policy's first decade. The workshop is held online on Microsoft Teams on Friday, 2 October 2026, from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Concept note
India is a founder member of the WTO and a signatory to the TRIPS Agreement, but until 2016 it had no IPR policy of its own. On 12 May 2016 the Central Government launched the National IPR Policy to build an IP ecosystem conducive to innovation and creativity, create awareness of the economic, social and cultural benefits of IPRs, stimulate IPR generation and commercialisation, and modernise and strengthen IPR administration, enforcement and adjudication.
The policy set out seven objectives:
- IPR Awareness
- Generation of IPRs
- Legal and Legislative Framework
- Administration and Management
- Commercialisation of IPR
- Enforcement and Adjudication
- Human Capital Development
IPR Chairs, research centres, incentive programmes and the filing of patents, trademarks and GI applications were initiated and encouraged under it. After ten years, the workshop assesses the working of the policy in its sum and substance and draws lessons for future strategy in this domain.
