About the National Human Rights Commission

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India is a statutory body constituted under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, mandated to protect and promote human rights. It has conducted internship programmes since 1998 to spread awareness among university students about the protection and promotion of human rights.

About the internship

The Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI) - August 2026 is a two-week, full-time virtual internship running from 3rd to 14th August 2026, held from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Around 40-45 sessions on various human rights issues are planned, including interactions with the Chairperson and Members of NHRC and senior officials, group project work, book reviews, films on human rights, and virtual field visits to jails, police stations and shelter homes.

Who can apply

  • Students in the 3rd year and onwards of any integrated 5-year PG course
  • Students in the 3rd or final year of a graduation course
  • Students of any semester/year of a post-graduate degree course (including the 3-year LL.B. programme)
  • Students of any semester/year of a post-graduate diploma course
  • Research scholars in any stream

Eligibility conditions

Applicants must have secured a minimum of 60% marks in Class XII and in the first four semesters of their graduation/five-year integrated course, with the percentage calculated clearly from CGPA/SGPA along with the conversion formula. Candidates must not be more than 28 years old as on 1 July 2026. Students who have attended any earlier NHRC internship programme are not eligible to apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online through the "Online Short Term Internship" link on the NHRC website (https://nhrc.nic.in) or via the NHRC India Mobile App only. Applicants must submit a 250-word Statement of Purpose, self-attested mark-sheets of Class X, Class XII and the first four semesters, and a Letter of Recommendation (Annex-I) signed and sealed by the Principal/HOD/Dean. Applications sent by email or post will not be entertained.

Selection and benefits

Selection is based on Class XII marks (30 points), graduation marks (40 points) and the 250-word Statement of Purpose (30 points). All interns who successfully complete the programme receive a stipend of Rs. 2,000 and a certificate of participation, awarded on the basis of punctuality, discipline, participation and timely submission of the group project and book reviews. The final list of selected interns will be displayed on the NHRC website.

Important note on the deadline

The last date for submission of the application is 10 July 2026 (18:00 hours). No application will be accepted after this deadline. Applicants must ensure their availability for the full-time schedule before applying.
