Officer (Law) in Grade A at Indian Oil Corporation Limited (10 Posts, Pay Scale Rs 50,000-1,60,000, 2 Years PQE)

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IndianOil) is a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise and India's flagship energy company, with a presence across the hydrocarbon value chain spanning refining, pipelines, marketing, petrochemicals, natural gas and emerging energy businesses. It is consistently ranked among the Fortune Global 500 companies. Under its stated vision of "The Energy of India", the Corporation is investing in biofuels, green hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, renewable energy, LNG, city gas distribution and next-generation mobility, alongside its refining and petrochemicals business.

Advertisement No. IOCL/CO-HR/RECTT/2026/01, dated 14 August 2026, covers the recruitment of executives in IndianOil through a Computer Based Test (CBT). Within it, the Law discipline in Grade A carries the following vacancies:

Reservation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities applies horizontally as per Government of India guidelines. IndianOil states that the total number of vacancies may increase or decrease at the absolute discretion of the management, based on organisational requirement.

The qualification must be a full-time regular one from an institution, college, university or deemed university recognised by AICTE or the UGC. For the Law discipline, a candidate must hold either:

• a graduate degree in any discipline and a Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB); or
• a five-year integrated LLB degree.

The minimum marks required are 60 per cent for General, EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates, and 55 per cent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates, in each of the graduation and LLB degrees (or in the integrated LLB degree, as applicable). The LLB degree must be recognised by the Bar Council of India. Candidates who claim work experience from law firms, chambers of practising advocates or independent practice must produce their original Bar Council of India registration certificate at the time of document verification.

A minimum of two years of cumulative post-qualification professional experience, calculated as on 30 June 2026, is mandatory. Only experience gained after the date of declaration of the final law qualification result counts. Experience will be recognised from the following:

• practising as an advocate in courts or tribunals;
• working with law firms;
• working with private or public sector organisations handling legal functions;
• working with Central or State Governments handling a legal function.

The experience must be in one or more of these areas: handling litigation (civil, consumer and criminal matters) before judicial and quasi-judicial forums; arbitration, conciliation and other dispute resolution mechanisms; or drafting and vetting legal or contractual documents, giving legal opinions and handling matters relating to mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and regulatory issues. Internships, teaching experience, part-time work, experience gained as part of acquiring a qualification, and short-term traineeships such as summer or winter projects are expressly excluded. Shortlisted candidates must furnish original experience documents on the letterhead of the issuing organisation, law firm, court or government office, stating the name of the organisation, the work profile and designation, and the service period. Lawyers in independent practice must furnish a record of appearances issued by the respective courts; the period between the oldest and the latest appearance before 30 June 2026 is what will be counted.

The upper age limit for the Law Officer (Grade A) post is 30 years as on 1 July 2026 for General and EWS candidates. By date of birth, the cut-offs are:

• General and EWS: born on or after 1 July 1996 (PwBD: 1 July 1986)
• OBC (NCL): born on or after 1 July 1993 (PwBD: 1 July 1983)
• SC and ST: born on or after 1 July 1991 (PwBD: 1 July 1981)

Relaxation for Ex-Servicemen and Commissioned Officers, including ECOs and SSCOs, follows extant Government of India guidelines. The only document accepted as proof of age is the certificate issued by the Board of Secondary Education for passing Matriculation or Higher Secondary that declares the date of birth.

Grade A carries an induction initial basic pay of Rs 50,000 per month in the pay scale of Rs 50,000-1,60,000, with an approximate cost to company of Rs 18.4 lakh per annum. Over and above the basic pay, selected candidates receive Dearness Allowance and other allowances as per the rules of the Corporation. Other benefits listed in the advertisement include HRA or subsidised housing accommodation depending on the place of posting, medical facilities, gratuity, contributory provident fund, a group personal accident insurance scheme, leave encashment, Leave Travel Concession or Leave Fare Assistance, a contributory superannuation benefit fund scheme, conveyance advance and maintenance reimbursement, and Performance Related Pay. The Corporation notes that actual remuneration may vary with the place of posting, its financial performance and the individual's annual performance appraisal.

Selection comprises a Computer Based Test, a Group Discussion and Group Task, and a Personal Interview. The CBT has 100 objective multiple-choice questions: Section A on General Aptitude (20 Quantitative Aptitude, 15 Logical Reasoning and 15 Verbal Ability of English Language questions, 60 minutes) and Section B on Domain Knowledge (50 questions, 90 minutes). Each question carries one mark and 0.25 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer. Sections are attempted in fixed order, A followed by B. Compensatory time of 80 and 120 minutes respectively applies to eligible PwBD candidates allowed a scribe.

To qualify in the CBT, General, EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates must secure 40 per cent in each section and 45 per cent overall; SC and ST candidates 35 per cent in each section and 40 per cent overall; and PwBD candidates 25 per cent in each section and 30 per cent overall. Shortlisting for the GD, GT and PI is by CBT marks in descending order for the respective domain, and merely qualifying does not guarantee a call. The final merit list uses a composite score weighted 85 per cent CBT, 5 per cent GD and GT (minimum 40 per cent) and 10 per cent PI (minimum 40 per cent), with a qualifying composite score of 45 per cent for General, EWS and OBC (NCL), 40 per cent for SC and ST, and 30 per cent for PwBD. The CBT will be held across 83 test cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Patna, Guwahati, Jaipur, Bhopal, Chandigarh region (Mohali), Kochi (Ernakulam) and Port Blair; candidates must give three centre preferences in order of priority and no change is allowed later. Candidates called for the GD, GT and PI are reimbursed second AC rail fare or actual fare, whichever is lower, for journeys of not less than 30 km.

Applications are accepted only online, through the IBPS-hosted registration portal linked from IndianOil's Latest Job Opening page. Candidates other than SC, ST and PwBD must pay a non-refundable application fee of Rs 1,000 plus GST as applicable; SC, ST and PwBD candidates are exempt. Payment can be made by debit card (RuPay, Visa, MasterCard, Maestro), credit card, internet banking, IMPS, cash cards, mobile wallets or UPI, and any card or transaction charges are borne by the candidate. The fee is not refunded under any circumstances and no chargeback may be claimed.

Before registering, candidates should scan a photograph of 4.5 cm by 3.5 cm captured in April 2026 or later and a signature in black ink, and must have a valid personal email ID and mobile number, neither of which can be changed once registered. On registration a Provisional Registration Number and password are generated and should be noted down. Candidates should take a printout of the system-generated application form and the e-receipt; non-generation of the e-receipt indicates a payment failure.

The advertisement states that a selected Law Officer will be required to independently undertake all activities associated with litigation in civil, consumer and criminal matters before various judicial and quasi-judicial forums, including drafting and vetting pleadings and notices and attending proceedings; alternative dispute resolution, including drafting and vetting pleadings and notices and attending proceedings before ADR forums; drafting and vetting contractual documents including agreements and notices; rendering legal opinions on business issues, including those relating to mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and regulatory matters; and any other work depending on organisational requirement. Desired skills listed are knowledge of all applicable laws, rules and regulations, excellent written and verbal communication, experience in the oil and gas or petrochemical industry, and the ability to prepare complex legal documents. Depending on the requirement of the Corporation, selected candidates can be placed anywhere in India at any section, plant, unit, department or division, or at any associate, subsidiary, group or joint venture company, including overseas offices.
