Overview

The India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) is inviting applications for the engagement of Research Associates at its campus in Dwarka, New Delhi. This is a full-time, on-site research role offering a consolidated remuneration of Rs. 7.2 LPA to Rs. 9.6 LPA (roughly Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 80,000 per month).

About the organisation

IIIDEM was established by the Election Commission of India as a global resource centre in the field of democracy and election management. It works through several schools and centres, including the School of Election Management, Voter Education and Media; the School of Electoral Laws; the School of Election Technologies; and centres for Research and Innovation, Curriculum Development, National Training, International Training, and Collaboration and Partnerships.

IIIDEM is also supporting the ECI, which has assumed the Chairship of the Council of Member States of International IDEA for 2026, themed "Democracy for an inclusive, peaceful, resilient and sustainable world."

The role and responsibilities

Research Associates provide research, academic, and training support across IIIDEM's schools and centres on electoral management and democratic governance. Key responsibilities include:

  • Executing approved research on electoral management and governance themes using rigorous mixed-method methodology.
  • Collecting, analysing, and interpreting primary and secondary data independently.
  • Assisting with surveys, literature reviews, and methodology preparation.
  • Writing policy briefs and contributing to thematic reports aligned with India's International IDEA Chairship priorities.
  • Presenting research findings at relevant platforms and maintaining research documentation and data integrity.

Positions available

The indicative number of positions is 12, spread across four categories:

  • Research Associate (Democracy and Election Management) - 7 positions
  • Research Associate (Law) - 2 positions
  • Research Associate (Technology) - 2 positions
  • Research Associate (Media) - 1 position

Who can apply

The minimum eligibility (Master's with 55% and UGC-NET, OR a PhD) varies by category:

  • Democracy and Election Management: in Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, or other allied disciplines.
  • Law: in Law, with 2-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Technology: in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field.
  • Media: in Journalism or Mass Communication.

Preference is given to candidates with research experience and published papers in Scopus/UGC-CARE List journals, policy briefs, or other academic publications. Minimum requirements may be relaxed for candidates with outstanding credentials.

Compensation and details

Research Associates receive a consolidated, fixed remuneration of Rs. 7.2 LPA to Rs. 9.6 LPA, decided by the Selection Committee based on academic and research track record, quality of experience, and current remuneration. There is an annual increase of up to 10% based on performance evaluation.

The engagement is initially for two years, extendable by one more year subject to satisfactory performance. It is a full-time, on-site position at the IIIDEM campus in Dwarka, Delhi. The role does not include HRA, travel allowance, health insurance, pension, or any employment guarantee post-engagement. Candidates are engaged through IIIDEM's HR agency, the National Institute of Smart Governance (NISG).
