Ph.D. in Law Admissions at VIT School of Law through VITREE 2027 (January 2027 Session)

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by Dr. G. Viswanathan and now runs campuses at Vellore, Chennai, Amaravati (VIT-AP) and Bhopal. The VITREE information brochure records more than 67,000 students drawn from across India and 54 countries, over 1,900 full-time faculty with 230 adjunct professors from foreign universities, and more than 280 MoUs with academic and research institutions.

The VIT School of Law (VITSOL) at the Chennai campus is one of the schools listed in the VITREE January 2027 brochure as offering doctoral research, and the VIT-AP School of Law (VSL) at the Amaravati campus is listed in the corresponding VIT-AP table. Both carry the question paper code LAW for candidates applying on a postgraduate qualification.

VITREE 2027 (January Session) is the common entrance route to the Ph.D., Direct Ph.D. and Ph.D. in Deep Technology programmes across the VIT group. For law, only the regular Ph.D. is on offer; Direct Ph.D. and Deep Technology Ph.D. are marked “No” against both law schools in the brochure.

Two official VIT documents describe the campus availability of the law programme differently. The VITREE January 2027 information brochure lists VIT School of Law (VITSOL) inside the table headed “Research Programmes offered at VIT Chennai Campus (Schools)” with Ph.D. marked “Yes”, and separately lists the VIT-AP School of Law under the VIT-AP campus table. The VITREE January 2027 eligibility criteria PDF, however, prints the heading “For Ph.D. in Law: (Offered in VIT-AP Campuses Only)”.

The brochure also states that change of campus, school, venue, date of entrance examination, interview and specialisation will not be permitted once the application is submitted. Applicants who want the Chennai campus should therefore confirm the campus in writing with the Deputy Director (Admissions), VIT Chennai or the Dean Academic Research before locking their choice in the online form.

The eligibility criteria document requires a Master’s degree in law (LL.M. or M.L.) from a recognised university or institute in the relevant field, with a first class in the qualifying degree carrying 60 per cent marks in aggregate across all years or semesters where marks are awarded, or a minimum CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale where letter grades are awarded.

• For all research programmes it is mandatory that previous degrees (both UG and PG) were studied in the regular, full-time mode.
• Candidates whose qualifying degree result is awaited, or who complete the degree in December 2026, are also eligible to apply for VITREE.
• Full-time (Internal Full-Time) registration is the category available at the Vellore, Chennai and VIT-AP campuses; external part-time registration is offered only at VIT Bhopal, and is open to teachers in permanent positions at other colleges and to candidates sponsored by recognised R&D organisations.
• Foreign nationals and NRI candidates must register through a separate link and pay fees in USD; candidates with valid GRE and TOEFL scores are given preference.

Selection for the Ph.D. is based on the VITREE January 2027 score, postgraduate degree marks, the research proposal and a personal interview. VITREE is a two-hour computer based test held on 6 December 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon across 25 cities in India. The paper carries 100 multiple choice questions: 70 technical questions from the qualifying degree examination, 15 on English communication skills and 15 on statistics and probability. One mark is awarded for a correct answer and zero for a wrong answer, so there is no negative marking.

The published syllabus for the LAW paper covers six units: Legal Research Methodology (including sociological and empirical methods, hypothesis and null hypothesis, research plan and research proposal); Constitutional Law with leading cases; Jurisprudence, covering the different schools of law and critical analysis of law; General Principles of Criminal Law; remedies available under Tort law with leading cases; and Emerging Issues in Law, spanning IPR, cyber law, international law, contracts, justice education, justice administration, labour and industrial law, and personal and administrative law.

The brochure states that all applicants appearing for VITREE are eligible to attend the personal interview. Interviews are scheduled for 12 and 13 December 2026 and the interview mode is to be announced.

The application fee is Rs 1,200 inclusive of GST and is not refunded under any circumstances. Tuition is payable annually at the rates below, alongside a caution deposit of Rs 3,000 and a thesis fee of Rs 10,000 payable only at the time of thesis submission:

• Ph.D. Internal Full-Time: Rs 40,000 per annum
• Ph.D. External Part-Time (Teachers): Rs 60,000 per annum
• Ph.D. External Part-Time (Industry): Rs 75,000 per annum

A VIT research fellowship is offered to admitted full-time Ph.D. scholars at the Vellore, Chennai and VIT-AP campuses. For candidates who have qualified GATE above the 60th percentile or hold a qualified NET score, the fellowship is Rs 35,000 in the first year and Rs 40,000 in the second and third years. For other scholars it is Rs 31,000 in the first year and Rs 35,000 in the second and third years. Hostel accommodation is available for research scholars, and scholars are encouraged to apply for CSIR or UGC JRF, INSPIRE Fellowships, Rajiv Gandhi Scholarships and other government schemes.

The minimum period for submitting a regular Ph.D. thesis is three years, and the maximum period of study must not exceed six years.

Applications are made online through the VIT Ph.D. application portal. Online applications opened on 17 August 2026 and the last date for submission is 20 November 2026.

• Register and complete the form at the Ph.D. application portal, choosing the campus, school, specialisation and test city.
• Prepare a research proposal using the official template for Ph.D. and Direct Ph.D. applicants; the proposal is one of the four assessed components.
• Pay the application fee of Rs 1,200 including GST online.
• Foreign national and NRI candidates apply instead through the separate international admissions link named on the research admissions page.

VITREE test cities span 25 locations, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Nagercoil, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Puducherry, Amaravati, Tirupathi, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur.

Selected candidates must carry the following when reporting in person in January 2027: the tuition fee payment receipt; Class X and Higher Secondary mark lists; UG and PG degree or provisional certificates with year-wise, semester-wise or consolidated mark sheets; the transfer, migration or college leaving certificate in original; a copy of the Aadhaar card; two recent passport size colour photographs; a copy of the NET, UGC or GATE score card where applicable; and the first page of an Indian Bank passbook.

Three notarised affidavits on stamp paper of Rs 200 are also required, covering admissions by the scholar, admissions by the parent or guardian, and the software usage policy, along with a certificate of physical fitness certified by an authorised physician and an undertaking form signed by the student and parent. Originals are returned immediately after verification.
