About the Programme

The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi has invited applications for its Ph.D. Programme 2026. Two programmes are on offer, each in a full-time and a part-time mode:

  • Ph.D. Programme in Law
  • Interdisciplinary Ph.D., in Law and Economics, Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science or Management

The full-time programme runs for 3 years and the part-time programme for 4 years. The Ph.D. Programme is governed by the latest UGC Regulations as revised from time to time.

Eligibility

  • Ph.D. in Law: minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade in LL.M. for General category candidates, and 50% for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/Differently-Abled candidates.
  • Interdisciplinary Ph.D.: minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade in any stream of post-graduation for General category candidates, and 50% for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/Differently-Abled candidates.
  • In line with the UGC public notice dated 27 March 2024, candidates are considered on the basis of UGC-NET marks in three categories: Category 1 (qualified for JRF and Assistant Professor), Category 2 (qualified for Assistant Professor and Ph.D. admission) and Category 3 (qualified for Ph.D. admission only).
  • Part-time candidates must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer stating that they may study part-time, that their duties leave sufficient time for research, and that they will be relieved from duty, if required, to complete the course work.

Selection Process

  • JRF-qualified (Category 1) candidates are admitted on the basis of an interview, as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for the Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.
  • For Category 2 and Category 3 candidates, 70% weightage is given to the test (NET) score and 30% to the interview. Admission is on the combined merit of NET marks and viva voce/interview marks.
  • Candidates must submit a preliminary synopsis of 8-10 pages on the proposed research work along with the application form.
  • Candidates who fail to appear in the viva will not be considered. Viva dates for qualified candidates will be notified later on the university website.
  • The names of shortlisted candidates for final admission will be displayed on the university website, and selected candidates are enrolled on payment of the prescribed fee.

Residency Requirements

  • Full-time: full-time presence during the course. Full-time scholars must be present at the University during the programme and undertake the teaching and research activities assigned to them.
  • Part-time: 30 days of presence on campus in each academic year.

After Admission

Enrolled scholars must complete course work, which ends with a written examination. Only those who complete the course work successfully may submit the final synopsis, which is defended before a panel and resubmitted as suggested if rejected. A guide is allotted by the University after a successful defence of the final synopsis.

Fee

The notice asks applicants to pay through RTGS/NEFT/Net Banking/UPI bank transfer to the NUSRL Ranchi account with HDFC Bank, Kanke Road, Ranchi, but does not state the application fee amount; check the online form. The programme fee structures published on the University website are:

  • Full-time: Rs 1,80,000 at admission (including Rs 23,500 mess fee per semester), Rs 2,62,500 plus mess fee for the first year, and Rs 1,89,500 plus mess fee for each of the second and third years.
  • Part-time: Rs 1,32,500 at admission, Rs 2,15,000 for the first year, and Rs 1,65,000 for each of the second, third and fourth years.
  • Both modes: Rs 15,000 refundable caution money (included above), Rs 50,000 per semester as extension fee after the minimum period, and Rs 50,000 for thesis evaluation and final presentation including viva.

The University reserves the right to change the fee structure before the admission process is completed.

How to Apply

  • Fill in the online application form on the NUSRL ERP portal on or before 31 October 2026.
  • Send a hard copy of the application with the required enclosures to The Registrar, NUSRL, At Nagri, P.O. Bukru, Ranchi Patratu Road, Kanke, Ranchi - 834006, on or before 6 November 2026.
  • The envelope should bear the superscription "Application for Admission to the Doctoral Programme".
  • Any changes will be notified on the university website, www.nusrlranchi.ac.in.
