About the organiser

The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi is a National Law University established by Act 27 of 2005 of the Kerala Legislature. Its campus is at H.M.T. Colony P.O., Kalamassery, Kochi 683503, Kerala. The University runs the five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programme, one-year and executive LL.M. programmes, post-graduate diplomas and a Ph.D. programme, and houses sixteen research centres.

Posts notified

Two separate notifications, both dated 29 June 2026 and signed by the Registrar, invite applications for permanent teaching posts in Law:

  • Professor in Law - 1 vacancy, reservation turn Ezhava/Thiyya/Billava, nature of vacancy permanent. Reference No. NUALS/ADMN/EST/A1/1505/2026 (ii).
  • Assistant Professor in Law - 1 vacancy, reservation turn Scheduled Caste, nature of vacancy permanent. Reference No. NUALS/ADMN/EST/A1/1505/2026 (i).

Both posts are community-reserved. The notifications state that natives of outside Kerala State will not be considered for posts that come under the community reservation quota, and that rules of reservation as contemplated in the KSSR apply. Candidates claiming reservation must attach a self-attested copy of a valid community certificate issued by the competent authority.

Eligibility: Professor in Law

A candidate must satisfy either limb A or limb B of the notification.

  • A (i) An eminent scholar holding a Ph.D. degree in the concerned, allied or relevant discipline, with published work of high quality, actively engaged in research, with evidence of a minimum of 10 research publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals and a total research score of 120 as per the criteria in Appendix II, Table 2 of the UGC Regulations, 2018.
  • A (ii) A minimum of ten years of teaching experience in a University or College as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, and/or research experience at an equivalent level at a University or National Level Institution, with evidence of having successfully guided a doctoral candidate.
  • B An outstanding professional holding a Ph.D. degree in a relevant, allied or applied discipline from an academic institution not covered by limb A, or from industry, who has made a significant contribution to knowledge in the concerned discipline supported by documentary evidence, provided he or she has ten years of experience.

All applicants for the post of Professor must submit the self-assessment Academic Performance Indicator annexed to the notification, together with all supporting documents.

Eligibility: Assistant Professor in Law

A candidate must satisfy either limb A or limb B of the notification.

  • A (i) A Master's degree with 55% marks, or an equivalent grade on a point-scale, in a concerned, relevant or allied subject from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
  • A (ii) In addition, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test conducted by the UGC or the CSIR, or a similar UGC-accredited test such as SLET/SET, or hold a Ph.D. degree awarded in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 and their amendments, in which case exemption from NET/SLET/SET applies. Candidates registered for the Ph.D. programme before 11 July 2009 are governed by the then existing regulations of the awarding institution and are exempted from NET/SLET/SET subject to the conditions listed in the notification, namely a regular-mode Ph.D., evaluation by at least two external examiners, an open viva voce, two research papers from the Ph.D. work with at least one in a refereed journal, and two papers presented at UGC/ICSSR/CSIR-supported conferences, all certified by the Registrar or the Dean (Academic Affairs).
  • B A Ph.D. degree obtained from a foreign university or institution ranked among the top 500 in the World University Rankings at any time by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Times Higher Education (THE), or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Age must not be more than 50 years as on the date of the notification. A relaxation of 5% at both Bachelor's and Master's level is allowed for SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy Layer) and differently abled candidates, based only on the qualifying marks and without any grace mark procedure. Shortlisting follows the criteria in Table 3A of the UGC Regulations, 2018 and its amendments, and only shortlisted candidates are called for interview.

Scale of pay

  • Professor in Law - Academic Level 14, with rationalized entry pay of Rs 1,44,200 in the UGC scale of pay.
  • Assistant Professor in Law - Academic Level 10, with rationalized entry pay of Rs 57,700 in the UGC scale of pay.

Application fee

  • Professor in Law - Rs 2,000 (Rupees two thousand only).
  • Assistant Professor in Law - Rs 750 (Rupees seven hundred and fifty only).

The fee must be remitted by way of a Demand Draft drawn in favour of ‘The Registrar, NUALS’, payable at Ernakulam.

How to apply

The prescribed application form for each post can be downloaded from the University website, www.nuals.ac.in. Three sets of soft-bound hard copies of the duly filled application, with an index page and all pages serially numbered, together with the registration fee and self-attested copies of certificates proving age, caste/community, qualifications and experience, must reach the Registrar, The National University of Advanced Legal Studies, NUALS Campus, H.M.T. Colony P.O., Kalamassery, Kochi 683503, on or before the last date.

A soft copy of the application must also be sent to recruitment@nuals.ac.in. The scanned soft copy must be a clear, colour-scanned single PDF file of maximum 20 MB and minimum 100 DPI, matching the exact order of the hard copy. Mobile camera photographs are not accepted.

Applications must be typed and printed; handwritten entries are not accepted. No column may be left blank, and ‘NA’ must be entered where a field does not apply. All dates must strictly follow the DD-MM-YYYY format. The envelope containing the application must be superscribed with the advertisement number and the post applied for.

Conditions applicants should note

  • Applications from candidates already in service must be forwarded through proper channel or accompanied by a No Objection Certificate from the present employer.
  • Assessment is based solely on the claims made in the filled-in application. All credentials, including publications and research papers, must be included with sufficient proof at the time of submission; no subsequent additions are permitted.
  • Research papers must be listed chronologically with the latest as Sl. No. 1, and the corresponding serial number written in red ink on the top right corner of each hard copy, for example ‘Research Paper - 1’ or ‘Book Chapter - 1’.
  • All relevant pages of research papers and publications must be appended. Physical journals must be produced at the interview and active web links provided for online journals. Where a publication date is not clearly identifiable, the burden of proof rests entirely with the candidate.
  • Prescribed qualifications are reckoned as on the last date of receipt of applications. Applications received after the due date, or not in conformity with the prescribed qualifications, are summarily rejected.
  • No TA/DA is paid by the University for attending the interview.
  • The University reserves the right not to select or appoint any person if the Selection Committee is of the opinion that no candidate is suitable for appointment.
  • The rank list published under these notifications remains valid for one year from the date of publication.
