About the recruitment

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJA, Assam) has invited applications for engagement on a contractual basis under its DPIIT-IPR Chair, established under the Scheme for Pedagogy & Research in IPRs for Holistic Education & Academia (SPRIHA). The advertisement, No. NLUJAA/IPR/F/IPSUPP./2024/16/413 dated 28 July 2026, is issued by the Registrar of the University.

Applications are invited for the following positions:

  • Research Officer – 01 post
  • Research Assistant – 01 post

The appointments shall initially be for a period of one (01) year. The engagement may be extended further, subject to the performance of the candidate and continuation of the Chair.

In the event that no suitable candidate is available for the position of Research Officer, or the position remains unfilled, the University may engage an additional Research Assistant against the said position. Accordingly, a maximum of two (02) Research Assistants may be engaged, subject to the availability of suitable candidates and approval of the competent authority.

About the DPIIT-IPR Chair at NLUJA, Assam

The DPIIT-IPR Chair at National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam was instituted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, in 2018 under the Scheme for Pedagogy & Research in IPRs for Holistic Education & Academia (SPRIHA).

The Chair is established with the objective of promoting and facilitating Intellectual Property education, research, capacity building, awareness, and academic engagement, with particular emphasis on Intellectual Property issues relevant to the North-Eastern Region of India.

Remuneration

  • Research Officer (01 post): Rs. 67,000/- per month
  • Research Assistant (01 post): Rs. 57,000/- per month

The engagement is purely contractual, initially for one year, extendable subject to performance and continuation of the Chair.

Key responsibilities

The Research Officer and Research Assistant shall work under the overall guidance and supervision of the DPIIT-IPR Chair and shall assist in the research, academic, training, outreach, documentation, and administrative activities of the Chair. Their responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Assisting in and undertaking legal, interdisciplinary, empirical, and policy-oriented research in Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and allied areas, with particular emphasis on issues relevant to the North-Eastern Region of India.
  • Assisting in the conceptualisation, development, execution, and documentation of research projects, studies, surveys, and initiatives undertaken by the DPIIT-IPR Chair.
  • Undertaking research activities including literature review, legal and policy research, fieldwork, data collection, data analysis, documentation, and preparation of research notes, reports, and other research outputs.
  • Assisting in the preparation, editing, compilation, and dissemination of research papers, articles, policy briefs, working papers, reports, publications, presentations, and other academic materials.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of IPR-related databases, repositories, documentation, and knowledge resources, including resources relating to traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions, innovation, entrepreneurship, and other areas within the mandate of the Chair.
  • Assisting in the organisation and execution of seminars, conferences, workshops, training programmes, awareness programmes, boot camps, and other academic, capacity-building, and outreach activities of the IPR Chair.
  • Assisting in coordinating with faculty members, researchers, students, interns, government institutions, industry, legal professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators, artisans, and other stakeholders in connection with the activities of the Chair.
  • Supporting the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the research, training, outreach, and extension activities of the IPR Chair.
  • Assisting in the preparation of project proposals, concept notes, programme reports, briefing notes, presentations, correspondence, and other documents required for the functioning of the Chair.
  • The Research Officer may be entrusted with additional responsibilities relating to research coordination, supervision of Research Assistants/interns, project management, and institutional coordination, as assigned by the Chair.
  • Undertaking such administrative, coordination, and organisational responsibilities as may be necessary for the effective functioning of the DPIIT-IPR Chair.
  • Performing any other duties assigned by the Chairperson/competent authority that are consistent with the aims, objectives, and mandate of the DPIIT-IPR Chair under SPRIHA.

Eligibility: Research Officer (01 post, Rs. 67,000 per month)

Essential qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Law or in an allied/interdisciplinary discipline from a recognised University/Institution.
  • Demonstrated research experience or academic exposure in IPR, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, Geographical Indications (GIs), traditional knowledge (TK), traditional cultural expressions (TCEs), biodiversity, or other allied areas.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, digital documentation, spreadsheets and virtual meeting platforms.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Specialisation/research experience in Intellectual Property Rights or allied areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IPR, GIs, TK, TCEs, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer, or related areas.
  • Experience in legal research, policy research, academic writing, publication, documentation, or report preparation.
  • Experience in organising academic programmes, training programmes, workshops, seminars, conferences, awareness campaigns, or other capacity-building initiatives.
  • Familiarity with project management, budgeting, procurement, financial monitoring, utilisation reporting, and compliance requirements under externally funded projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate with government departments, academic institutions, industry, MSMEs, start-ups, funding agencies, civil society organisations, or other stakeholders in programme implementation, documentation, reporting, and event management.
  • Working knowledge of Assamese or any other language spoken in the North-Eastern Region.

Eligibility: Research Assistant (01 post, Rs. 57,000 per month)

Essential qualifications:

  • A Master's Degree in Law (LL.M.) from a recognized University; OR a Postgraduate Degree from a recognized University. Candidates having training, academic exposure, or demonstrated interest in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) or allied areas are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, digital documentation, spreadsheets and virtual meeting platforms.

Desirable qualifications:

  • LL.M. (preferably with specialization in Intellectual Property Rights) or any other postgraduate qualification with specialization in Intellectual Property Rights, or recognized advanced training/certification in Intellectual Property Rights or allied areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IPR, GIs, TK, TCEs, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer, or related areas.
  • Experience in legal research, policy research, academic writing, publication, documentation, or report preparation.
  • Experience in organising academic programmes, training programmes, workshops, seminars, conferences, awareness campaigns, or other capacity-building initiatives.
  • Familiarity with project management, budgeting, procurement, financial monitoring, utilisation reporting, and compliance requirements under externally funded projects.

The suitable candidate would be selected on merit basis by the selection committee of the University.
