Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai (MNLU Mumbai) was established on 27 June 2014 by the Government of Maharashtra under Act VI of 2014. The University operates from the 2nd and 6th floors of the CETTM MTNL Building, Technology Street, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai 400076, and offers a five-year integrated B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) programme, several LL.M. and MBA specialisations, seven post-graduate diplomas including one in Intellectual Property Rights, and a Ph.D. programme in Law.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, launched the Scheme for Pedagogy and Research in IPRs for Holistic Education and Academia (SPRIHA) in 2016, under which IPR Chairs have been set up in select universities. The scheme gives effect to the National IPR Policy 2016 objective of strengthening IP Chairs in institutions of higher learning to provide quality teaching and research.
MNLU Mumbai is one of twelve universities and organisations in the country selected by DPIIT for an IPR Chair. Dr. W. M. Dhumane, former Senior Joint Controller of Patents and Designs, was appointed IPR Chair Professor with effect from 10 June 2020. The Chair's mandate covers IP education at UG, PG, diploma, certificate and online levels, research on IPR matters and their policy relevance, studies commissioned by DPIIT, creation of an IPR knowledge database and case-study repository, scholarships for research in emerging IPR areas, preparation of resource toolkits, facilitation of IPR filings, and research on industry-academia technology sharing.

The appointment is purely temporary, contractual and ad hoc in nature, and confers no right or claim to regular appointment, continuation, permanency or absorption in the University. All appointments are subject to the rules and regulations of the University and the Government and to the approval of the competent authority.
