About the Opportunity

Amazon's Legal Department is hiring a Risk Manager III (posted internally as a Senior Compliance Specialist) for the AWS Law Enforcement Response (LER) team based in India. Job ID: 10475365. The posting is listed under AWS India - Haryana, in the Legal job category.

In this role you will independently review and respond to law enforcement legal process, exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations, and drive process improvements at the intersection of law, technology and privacy. Amazon states that the successful candidate must be inquisitive, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, and demonstrate a bias for action, describing the work as intellectually challenging, mission-driven and fast-paced.

About the AWS Law Enforcement Response (LER) Team

The AWS Law Enforcement Response (LER) team sits within AWS Security Legal and is responsible for reviewing and responding to law enforcement requests, such as subpoenas, court orders and search warrants, received from government agencies around the world. The team's mission is to process these requests expeditiously and in full compliance with applicable law, while protecting the privacy and security of customers' information.

India is described as a high-volume jurisdiction, and the role is positioned as critical to meeting these obligations while maintaining standards of customer trust. India will be the primary focus, with additional support for law enforcement requests across other APAC jurisdictions, contributing to the team's regional coverage and building expertise across multiple legal frameworks.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Independently review, analyse and respond to law enforcement legal process received from government agencies.
  • Ensure all requests are processed expeditiously and in compliance with applicable laws, while safeguarding the privacy and security of business and customer information.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on Indian law enforcement frameworks, including the IT Act (Sections 69 and 79), BNSS and related regulations.
  • Manage interactions with Indian government portals (for example, SAHYOG) for receiving and responding to legal process.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, compliance playbooks and process documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows and partner with engineering and product teams to develop tools and automation for legal compliance processes.
  • Engage directly with Indian government agencies, regulators and law enforcement bodies on process and compliance matters.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with U.S.-based legal team members, security teams and business stakeholders to resolve complex or escalated requests.
  • Monitor changes in Indian law and regulation that impact law enforcement response processes and recommend updates accordingly.
  • In addition to India, support law enforcement response for other APAC jurisdictions as needed, including but not limited to Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and other countries where AWS operates.

A Day in the Life

Per the official posting, the day starts with reviewing incoming law enforcement requests from government agencies for validity, scope and compliance requirements, exercising independent judgment to determine appropriate responses and balancing legal obligations with customer privacy and data security.

Through the day you will manage requests through government portals such as SAHYOG, collaborate with the U.S.-based legal team over Slack and video calls, and escalate complex or novel issues as needed. You may engage directly with government agencies to clarify requests or negotiate scope, and will also spend time on process improvement, such as drafting updated SOPs or working with engineering partners on tool enhancements and automation.

Amazon notes that no two days are alike: one afternoon may go to researching new regulatory developments under local law, and the next to partnering with product teams on a portal enhancement.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of Law Enforcement Response Law experience.
  • 5+ years of compliance program management, legal, governance, audit, risk/loss prevention, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations involving competing legal, business and customer interests.
  • 2+ years of experience responding to law enforcement legal process (for example, court orders) or equivalent government/regulatory compliance experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience establishing processes, workflows, standard procedures and change management.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Experience working directly with government officials and regulatory bodies.
  • Experience with Indian law enforcement and regulatory frameworks, including the IT Act (Sections 69 and 79), BNSS, and related rules and guidelines.
  • Familiarity with Indian government portals (for example, SAHYOG) and processes for law enforcement requests.
  • Experience with international law enforcement frameworks and cross-border data disclosure issues.
  • Experience working with engineering or product teams to develop tools or automation for legal compliance workflows.
