The SAL Practitioner (ISSN 2661-4855) is a practice-oriented journal published by Academy Publishing, the publishing arm of the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL). It carries articles, comments, case notes and legislative updates that are pertinent to the practice of law, written with a practice slant rather than a purely academic one.
The journal is published only in electronic form. Articles may be read online in HTML or downloaded as PDFs on Academy Publishing's Journals Online platform, and all published material is also made available on LawNet. The SAL Journals Editorial Board, chaired by Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Debbie Ong, has oversight of the journal.
The Corporate call
Academy Publishing has issued a call for papers for the Corporate practice area of the SAL Practitioner. Unusually for a journal, the SAL Practitioner is organised by subject area of practice rather than by volume, and each area is curated by its own Subject Editor who commissions contributors and reviews submissions.
The Corporate section is curated by Subject Editor Mr Jerry Koh and Assistant Editor Ms Victoria Leong, both of Allen & Gledhill LLP.
Scope: what the Corporate section publishes
The Corporate section covers transactional and company-law subjects of use to practising lawyers. Recently published pieces in the section give a fair picture of scope:
- Acquisition of an S Corporation by a non-US investor
- Oppression and derivative actions
- Advising on a shareholder-requisitioned meeting to reconstitute an SGX-listed board
- Legal due diligence in a digital and data-driven economy
- Ancillary restraints in mergers and acquisitions from a competition law perspective
- Employee share option plans in Singapore
- Deposits in share purchase agreements
- Restraint of trade covenants in commercial agreements
Contributions should be pertinent to law practitioners in Singapore, so a piece grounded in another jurisdiction works best where it carries a lesson a Singapore practitioner can use.
Who may submit
Academy Publishing invites submissions from both local and international legal practitioners and allied professionals whose practice intersects with, or is closely related to, the practice of law. Foreign-qualified lawyers are therefore within the invitation, and neither Singapore admission nor SAL membership is stated as a condition.
The journal does not accept student submissions.
What you can submit

The work must be original. It must not have been published or otherwise made available elsewhere in any form or in any language, and the author warrants that it is not simultaneously under consideration by another publication and will not be sent elsewhere until the editors respond.
Submission guidelines
- Length: between 1,000 and 5,000 words, including footnotes. The Author's Guide adds that submissions should generally run 1,000 to 3,000 words excluding footnotes, and should not exceed 4,000 words including footnotes where much of the text sits in the notes; departures are considered case by case.
- Format: Microsoft Word.
- Each submission must include: the article title, the author's full name and credentials, a 100-word abstract, and the main text with footnote text set out at the bottom of each page.
- Credentials order: educational qualifications, then professional qualifications and present appointment, separated by semicolons.
- Citations: follow the Academy Publishing Author's Guide (SAL Practitioner). Note that ibid, id, supra and infra are not used. Repeat the citation in full.
- Acknowledgments, if desired, may be included as brief statements of thanks, but not personal dedications or in memoriam notes.
- Copyright permission for any third-party material must be obtained before submission and listed in the Third Party Copyright Confirmation Form at Annex B of the Author's Guide.
Review and publication
Academy Publishing states that its academic journals are peer-reviewed publications and that for the SAL Practitioner the review is conducted by the Subject Editor before the manuscript is passed to Academy Publishing. Only articles the Subject Editor deems suitable for publication are accepted.
After acceptance the article goes through Academy Publishing's editorial process: an initial completeness check and acknowledgment, the grant of a copyright licence, copy-editing and typesetting, a final check of the proofs by the author, and e-publication.
The copyright licence granted to SAL is non-exclusive: SAL is licensed to publish, reproduce and translate the work, and SAL undertakes always to acknowledge you as the author.
Fee, CPD points and how to submit
Academy Publishing states no submission fee, processing charge or publication fee for the SAL Practitioner, and no honorarium is offered. Authors intending to apply for private CPD points should note that an article needs to be at least 1,000 words excluding footnotes per named author, per paragraph 7(2)(a)(ii) of the SILE Guidelines on the Continuing Professional Development Scheme.
