About the Conference

The Department of Law and Criminology, Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK, is organising the Second International Conference on Just Transition and Environmental Justice, to be held on 10-11 September 2026 at Aberystwyth University. Under the theme "Emerging Developments and Implications for a Just Transition," the conference brings together scholars, researchers, and practitioners to examine the evolving legal, governance, and policy dimensions of the global transition to a low-carbon future, with particular attention to environmental justice and the Global South. The conference is convened by Prof. Engobo Emeseh (Professor of Environmental and Energy Law and Head of Department, Aberystwyth University) and Dr. Irekpitan Okukpon (University of Bradford), co-authors of the 2023 work "Just Transition and Environmental Justice: Principles, Practice and Implementation Strategies for a Post-oil Future."

Conference Theme and Sub-themes

Theme: Emerging Developments and Implications for a Just Transition. Submissions are invited under the following three sub-themes:

  • Theme I: Emerging global developments and governance challenges in just transition
  • Theme II: Oil industry divestment and the future of just transition in the Global South
  • Theme III: Climate litigation, climate finance and environmental justice

Who Can Submit

The conference is open to academics, researchers, doctoral candidates, legal practitioners, policymakers, and other professionals from all countries. Participants from across the globe are welcome to submit abstracts addressing any of the three conference sub-themes.

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts should be a maximum of 350 words.
  • Abstracts must clearly address one of the three conference sub-themes.
  • The abstract submission deadline is 15 July 2026.
  • Submissions should be sent by email to the conference organisers (see How to Submit below).
