About the opportunity

Indian Law Society, Pune, invites applications from committed professionals for engagement in Azim Premji Foundation-supported programmes aimed at strengthening access to justice and improving the quality of legal representation for marginalised communities in Maharashtra.

These posts are under Programme A: Fair Trial Programme, Kolhapur Central Jail and District Jail. The objective is to improve access to justice for undertrial prisoners by ensuring timely legal representation, bail support, counselling, documentation assistance, and systemic coordination with prison authorities and legal services institutions.

Location: Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

Senior Legal Fellow: role and responsibilities

  • Regular prison visits to interact with undertrial prisoners
  • Supervise and mentor Junior Legal Fellows in drafting, documentation and prison-based legal work
  • Conduct advanced legal review of case briefs, bail applications and trial-related documentation before submission
  • Identify systemic issues affecting undertrials and contribute to programme-level legal reporting
  • Preparation of case briefs and bail-related documentation
  • Coordination with legal aid lawyers and courts
  • Case tracking and follow-up
  • Legal rights awareness for undertrials
  • Assist the Programme Lead in legal monitoring, quarterly reviews and programme planning

Junior Legal Fellow: role and responsibilities

  • Regular prison visits to interact with undertrial prisoners
  • Preparation of case briefs and bail-related documentation
  • Coordination with legal aid lawyers and courts
  • Case tracking and follow-up
  • Legal rights awareness for undertrials
  • Working under the supervision of Senior Legal Fellows and following their instructions for attainment of project objectives

Eligibility

  • Senior Legal Fellow: graduate or postgraduate in law; 5 years and above of trial court experience, preferably in criminal law
  • Junior Legal Fellow: graduate or postgraduate in law; 2-5 years of trial court experience, preferably in criminal law
  • Both posts: strong drafting, case analysis and communication skills; willingness to work in custodial settings

Nature of appointment and pay

  • Full-time, project-based contractual positions, for a period from October 2026 to December 2028
  • Initial appointment for one year, renewable annually based on performance and project requirements
