The University of Pisa runs a Summer School on Law and Geopolitics in English. Between the afternoon of Monday, 5 July and the morning of Friday, 9 July 2027, twenty-five hours of lectures and seminars will be held. The programme is full-time and carries 3 ECTS.
Lectures will be delivered by European professors who are experts in topics with significant geopolitical impacts, with constant interaction between geopolitical experts and comparative law scholars, who will introduce the lectures. Professors and staff will prepare a documentation dossier for each lecture and upload it to the Summer School's MS Teams channel; participants use these materials in seminars analysing specific cases.
The main aim is to develop interdisciplinary knowledge that enables lawyers to analyse legal provisions in the context of geopolitical factors and allows geopolitical scholars to incorporate legal science into their analyses.
The lectures will illustrate the relationship between law and geopolitics in the following areas:
A special lesson will be dedicated to the concept of "nation", along with related legal concepts such as "state" and "people".
The Summer School will be held on campus in Pisa at Palazzo della Sapienza, Via Curtatone e Montanara, 15. An MS Teams connection will be provided so that the lectures and seminars can also be attended online.
Lectures and seminars will be scheduled in the morning or afternoon, leaving the other half of the day for individual or group study. Participants who wish to have ECTS acknowledged will be invited to write a paper on a subject agreed with the teachers. A list of partner hotels and restaurants will be provided for on-campus participants.
The Summer School will run only if at least 20 students enrol. The maximum number of participants is 75.
The Summer School is designed for four categories of participants, with no order of priority between them:
International applicants are welcome: the university's application guidance asks foreign students to upload a passport and states that applicants do not need an Italian tax code or a residence permit to enrol. Check whether you need a visa or insurance using the university's guidance for non-EU citizens.
The scientific advisor and the operational manager may request additional documentation if the materials provided do not show that the admission requirements are met.
Tuition fee: EUR 250.
Fees are paid by debit/credit card or PayPal through the university's online Payment Form, which will be available from 7 January 2027. Pay only after receiving the admission letter, and within 10 days of admission being confirmed. International students without an Italian tax code should tick 'Anonymous' to disable the Italian personal ID/VAT field and type their name and surname next to the pre-filled text in the 'Reason' field.
Refund policy: tuition fees are non-refundable, except that they will be refunded if the Summer School does not reach the minimum number of participants and is therefore not activated.
Applications are submitted through the University of Pisa's Alice portal by 26 March 2027, following the steps on the university's Summer/Winter School 'How to apply' page:
Once admission is confirmed, complete enrolment by paying the tuition fee within 10 days.
