The Future of Indigenous Peoples' Rights and the Rights of Nature in the Inter-American Legal Order, Webinar by the American Society of International Law (ASIL) [Online, 18 November 2026]

The American Society of International Law, headquartered in Washington DC, lists this online session as an ASIL Event on its events calendar under the full title “The Future of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in the Twenty-First Century and the Rights of Nature in the Inter-American Legal Order”. It looks at where Indigenous Peoples’ rights stand today within the Inter-American legal order and where they are heading, with particular attention to how they relate to the emerging rights of nature.

According to ASIL, three South American legal scholars will analyse:

• domestic judicial decisions and constitutional developments concerning Indigenous Peoples and the environment;
• the jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on Indigenous Peoples, environmental protection, intercultural justice and international environmental law;
• the achievements so far and the barriers that remain to recognising and actually implementing these rights; and
• practical legal and institutional strategies to strengthen Indigenous participation, protect ancestral territories and natural systems, and build coherent regional standards.

The webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, 18 November 2026, from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm US Eastern Time, as listed on ASIL’s calendar (America/New_York time zone). For participants in India this falls on Thursday, 19 November 2026, from 4:30 am to 5:45 am IST. The event is held entirely online.

ASIL says the programme is designed for scholars, practitioners, students, advocates and policymakers interested in human rights, constitutional law, Indigenous law and environmental governance. The listing does not restrict attendance to ASIL members or to any country, and the registration form accepts registrants from any country, including India. Law students and researchers working on comparative constitutional law, environmental law or the Inter-American human rights system will find it most relevant.
